BrightLocal Review 2026
BrightLocal is a local SEO platform for agencies, multi-location brands and small businesses. It tracks local rankings, audits and builds citations, manages reviews, and now measures AI visibility in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, with plans from $31/mo.

Key takeaways
- BrightLocal is one of the most established local SEO platforms, with 15,000+ customers, 16+ years in the market and a 4.8 Google rating (366 reviews, as shown on its site).
- Pricing is per location and per tier (Track, Manage, Grow). A single location starts at $31/mo billed annually, or $41/mo billed monthly. Citations are bought separately.
- The new Local AI Visibility Tracker scores a business 0-100 across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. It is a monitoring feature, though. It lacks the content generation, IP-verified AI crawler logs, AI traffic attribution and CMS publishing that Promptwatch offers.
- Strongest for agencies and multi-location brands that need rankings, citations, reviews and white-label reporting in one place. Weakest on social publishing and flexible reporting, according to user reviews.
- Not the right pick if your main goal is AI search visibility for a national or online brand, or if you want an all-in-one marketing suite.
BrightLocal is a local SEO platform that has been around for more than 16 years. It started as a toolkit for agencies that needed to check local rankings and clean up business listings, and it has grown into a broader product covering rank tracking, citation building, review monitoring and Google Business Profile management. The company says it has 15,000+ active customers and about 150 in-house support staff. It also runs a Learning Hub with over 1,000 articles, videos and courses, plus a free BrightLocal Academy course on local SEO.
The audience is clear from the homepage. There are three tracks: local businesses that want a guided platform, agencies and consultants managing anything from a handful of clients to 250 locations, and SaaS platforms that want to embed local SEO data through an API. A fully managed service starts at $499/mo, and citation building is sold a la carte. That mix of software, labor and API access is unusual. Most competitors pick one.
The most recent change is a September 2026 launch of a Local AI Visibility Tracker. I will spend a fair amount of time on it below, because it is the part of the product readers are asking about right now, and it is also where BrightLocal is thinnest compared with dedicated AI visibility platforms.
Key features
I have not verified every plan-level feature against the live app, so treat the tier details below as a guide and confirm them on BrightLocal's pricing page.
Local rank tracking. This is the original draw. You track Google local and organic rankings for chosen keywords at specific locations, and see how competitors move. The free Local SERP Checker shows results as a customer in a given place would see them, which is handy for sales pitches. Rankings are priced by location, so a ten-location franchise pays for ten locations, not a flat fee.
Citation tools. BrightLocal audits where your business name, address and phone number appear and flags inconsistencies. The Citation Builder then fixes or creates listings manually. Citations are bought separately, from $3.20 per site, or as low as $2 with bulk credits. The Citation Builder is accessible from all plans. Manual building is slower than pushing data to a listings network, but the per-citation, no-recurring-fee model suits agencies that only want to buy what they need.
Reputation monitoring. Reviews from multiple sites flow into one place so you can watch ratings and respond. Capterra reviewers have said the reporting and reputation side is not ideal for them, so check it against your own needs before committing.
Google Business Profile management. The GBP Post Scheduler lets you schedule and publish Google Posts for one or many locations, and it appears from the entry tier up. It works only for Google Business Profile. A competitor blog (SocialPilot, so take it with salt) points out that BrightLocal has no wider social media publishing at any tier, and that matches what the product page shows.
Local AI Visibility Tracker. This is new. It checks whether ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews recommend your business and gives each location a 0-100 score, split by platform and by prompt.
- Up to 20 prompts per location, suggested from your business category and editable. Results cover branded and unbranded prompts, with sentiment and recommendation strength.
- Competitors are auto-detected. You can compare mention rate, share of voice and average position.
- An AI sources leaderboard shows which domains AI cites for your category, and an AI-written note explains why competitors outrank you.
- Actions are ranked by impact, and citation gaps link straight into Citation Builder.
- BrightLocal says there is no extra subscription. The page does not say which tiers include it, so ask before assuming.
- A 14-day free trial with no credit card is on offer, and a free Local AI Visibility Checker gives a one-off score.
The tie-in to Citation Builder is clever. If AI keeps citing directories you are missing from, BrightLocal sells you the fix. Whether that fix moves AI recommendations is another matter, and the vendor's own survey data (58% of consumers have used AI to find a local business, n=1,164) is not independent evidence.
Free tools. Besides the AI checker, the Rank Fluctuation Monitor alerts you when Google's local algorithm shifts (daily, weekly or urgent-only), and the Google Review Link Generator gives you a direct review link for your profile. They are useful on their own and work as a lead funnel.
API solutions. SaaS platforms and agencies can pull listings, reviews, rankings and reporting data through BrightLocal's APIs. I did not verify endpoint coverage or rate limits, so developers should read the docs before planning around it.
Managed local SEO. From $499/mo, the team handles listings, content, reviews and ongoing optimization. For a business owner with no time, this is the easy button. For an agency, it is a way to resell without hiring.
Who is it for
The sweet spot is the agency with 10-100 local clients, like a small shop managing dentists, home service firms and law offices. They need rank tracking, citation cleanup and reports they can send under their own banner, and the per-location pricing scales in predictable steps. Multi-location brands with 20-100 sites, such as a regional self-storage chain, fit similarly. West Coast Self-Storage and PestCo Holdings appear in the company's own testimonials, which hints at the profile.
Single-location owners can use it too. A plumber or restaurant owner who wants to see where they rank and whether their listings are consistent will find the entry tier affordable, and the support team is a real selling point. Several G2 and Trustpilot reviewers praise it, though one G2 review is headlined 'Lack of Customer Support' (the text is ambiguous), so experiences vary.
Who should skip it? Anyone whose business is not tied to a map. A SaaS company or an online retailer chasing national AI visibility will find the AI tracker too location-centric. Teams that want social publishing, a full CRM or advanced custom reporting will also feel boxed in. Enterprises above 100 locations are on request pricing, so budget is a conversation, not a number.
Integrations and ecosystem
The verified part of the ecosystem is the API for SaaS partners and the Help Center and BrightLocal Academy for learning. I did not confirm a full integrations list, so I will not invent one. Citation Builder is integrated with the AI tracker's action list. The platform is web-based, and the data is exportable through reports, though I did not test the formats.
For directory-style coverage of other options in this space, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com lists dedicated AI visibility tools alongside local SEO products.
Pricing and value
Pricing is by number of locations across three tiers. Annual billing saves about 25%.
- Track: $41/mo monthly or $369/yr ($31/mo) for one location. Ten locations are $83/mo monthly or $747/yr.
- Manage: $54/mo monthly or $485/yr ($40/mo) for one location. Ten locations are $109/mo monthly or $980/yr.
- Grow: $65/mo monthly or $584/yr ($49/mo) for one location. Ten locations are $131/mo monthly or $1,178/yr.
- 100+ locations: price on request.
- Citations: from $3.20 each, or as low as $2 with bulk credits, no recurring fees.
- Managed SEO service: from $499/mo.
Two discrepancies on the site are worth flagging. The FAQ says plans start from $39 a month, which looks stale next to the $31 headline price. And the Track annual price for 51-60 locations is $2,826 in the table but $2,866 in the FAQ. Confirm both on the live pricing page before you budget. There is a free trial (the AI tracker page mentions 14 days, no card), though I did not confirm the trial length for the core platform.
Value is good for agencies, since per-location pricing in the $31-$65 range for one location is competitive in local SEO. It gets pricey at scale: Grow at 91-100 locations is $989/mo monthly. Compared with a pure AI visibility platform, though, you are not paying for the same thing. For example, Promptwatch's Essential plan is $95/mo for 50 prompts across all AI models, with Business at $579/mo, and those plans are built around AI search rather than local rankings. Check promptwatch.com/pricing for current numbers.
Strengths and limitations
What it does well
- Local focus. Rankings, citations, reviews and GBP posting in one tool, with free utilities that are actually useful.
- Flexible buying. Self-serve, a la carte citations, managed service or API. Few vendors cover all four.
- Human support. About 150 support staff, and reviewers often single them out.
- Transparent, location-based pricing. You can work out your bill from a table.
- Review base. 1,627 reviews across Google, G2, Capterra and Trustpilot, with ratings of 4.6-4.8 as shown on the vendor's site.
Where it falls short
- Manual entry of company details is not intuitive, per Capterra reviewers, and reporting and reputation management drew criticism.
- No social publishing beyond GBP posts.
- The AI tracker is local-only and capped at 20 prompts per location, so it is a monitoring add-on rather than an AI visibility platform.
What it lacks versus Promptwatch
If AI visibility is your priority, this is the part to read. The tracker covers ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. Promptwatch tracks the real interfaces of 20 AI engines and models, including Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Meta AI, Amazon Alexa and coding agents. Beyond that, BrightLocal does not appear to offer:
- A Content Agent that writes and publishes GEO content to WordPress, Webflow or Framer, or Content Refresh for existing pages
- IP-verified AI crawler logs and crawl-to-citation tracking
- AI traffic attribution and visitor analytics with conversions, plus Google Search Console and Bing data alongside AI data
- Brand Narrative and Fact Check, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and Instagram citation tracking, AI Shopping and Ads Radar
- Prompt volumes and difficulty, query fan-outs, an Action Board and Agent Chat
Some of this may matter less for a plumber than for a SaaS brand. Still, the citation behaviour is changing quickly. Promptwatch Data shows that product pages are the most cited content type in ChatGPT at 22.4% of citations (Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026), and that kind of insight comes from deep citation classification that a lightweight local tracker does not offer.
Bottom line
BrightLocal is a solid pick for agencies and multi-location businesses that need local rankings, citation work and review monitoring under one roof, with real people to call. The AI tracker is a sensible bolt-on that keeps local customers from needing a second tool for a basic score.
If you want to go beyond monitoring and actually improve how AI engines mention and cite you, Promptwatch is the stronger alternative, since it generates and publishes content, reads crawler logs and ties visibility to traffic. Many local agencies will reasonably run both. Best use case: managing local rankings, listings and reviews for dozens of client locations from one dashboard.
