The Best AI SEO Tools With Official MCP Support in 2026

Which SEO platforms ship an official MCP server in 2026? A practical comparison of Ahrefs, Semrush, DataForSEO, SE Ranking, Moz, Similarweb and Surfer, with real entry prices, read/write access and pitfalls.

Key takeaways

  • Official hosted MCP servers now exist for Ahrefs, Semrush, DataForSEO, SE Ranking, Moz, Similarweb and Surfer (Surfer and Moz are still in beta).
  • The advertised price and the real entry price differ: Ahrefs MCP needs a paid plan from Lite at $129/mo, Semrush needs a plan with API units, and DataForSEO needs a $50 top-up.
  • Most servers are read-only. SE Ranking and Surfer write only inside their own platforms. Only a CMS or WordPress MCP changes your actual site.
  • Watch for row caps (Ahrefs Lite returns 100 rows per request) and API unit burn (Semrush's 50,000 units go fast).
  • A free Google Search Console server for your own data, plus one paid research server, covers most teams.

What MCP support actually means for an SEO tool

MCP is the Model Context Protocol. In plain terms, it is a connector that lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor pull live data from a tool instead of answering from training data. In SEO that matters more than almost anywhere. Ask a chatbot about your rankings with no connector and you get a plausible answer built from nothing. Connect a server and it reads your actual positions, backlinks and clicks.

A typical morning workflow looks like this: pull 28 days of Search Console data, flag pages where position improved but clicks fell, then check whether an AI Overview now sits above the result. That used to be an hour across three tabs. With MCP it is one prompt, as Ryan Doser describes in his tested roundup.

Ryan Doser's roundup of tested SEO MCP servers, with a table of real entry prices

One caveat before the list. Most "best MCP server" roundups are written by vendors who rank themselves first. Pricing and status below come from secondary sources dated October 2026 (mainly InstaWP's tested comparison), so confirm against each vendor's pricing page and docs before you buy.

The two big generic AI SEO listicles (OneLittleWeb and SE Ranking) do not address MCP at all. A tool can top those lists and still have no connector.

Ahrefs

Ahrefs runs a hosted server at https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp over streamable HTTP. Auth is OAuth, which mints an MCP-scoped key, or you can create a key yourself. About 20 tool groups are documented: Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Brand Radar and a Search Console group.

Three things to know:

  • MCP calls burn API units from your monthly allowance.
  • Row caps apply per request: Lite 100, Standard 250, Advanced 500. On Lite, an agent asking for a full keyword list gets the first 100 rows and may not tell you.
  • Ahrefs says calling the endpoint from custom scripts, bridges or standalone JSON-RPC clients is unsupported and not permitted. Use a supported client.

Also, ignore the old local npm package @ahrefs/mcp. It was archived on Feb 24, 2026, yet it still pulls roughly 4,600 downloads a week. If a tutorial tells you to install it, the tutorial is stale.

If your client caps tool counts, a ?tools= parameter or the essentials preset limits what loads.

Semrush

Semrush hosts its server at https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp, streamable HTTP only, with OAuth 2.1 by default and an API key header as fallback. Eligible plans are Semrush One Starter ($199/mo), One Pro+, and SEO Classic Pro or Guru, each with 50,000 API units. One Advanced needs an extra units package.

It is strictly read-only, which many teams will count as a feature. It cannot create projects or change settings. The pitfall is unit burn: 50,000 units disappear fast on large reports, so write narrow prompts (one domain, one country, a capped row count) rather than asking for everything. ContextBolt also reports a built-in ChatGPT connector for Plus, Pro and Business users.

DataForSEO

DataForSEO is the odd one out, and arguably the best value if you are comfortable with usage-based billing. There is a $1 free trial credit with no card, then a $50 minimum top-up. A queued SERP request costs $0.0006, priority $0.0012 and live $0.002. MCP calls hit the live endpoint, so budget $0.002 each.

It covers ten API modules, including an AI optimization module that reads AI Overview citations. The server code is free and open source and works with Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT and Docker. It cannot change anything on your site, but a runaway agent can spend your credits, so set a modest top-up and watch the first few sessions.

SE Ranking

SE Ranking has an official hosted server listed in the MCP Registry. The entry price is a 14-day trial, then $50 for 250K credits for MCP alone, or the full suite at $103.20/mo billed annually. Tool count is claimed at 160+ (InstaWP) or 180+ (ContextBolt). Both numbers come from the vendor, so treat them as marketing until you test. It spans SEO and GEO tools, including AI visibility, and it can write to SE Ranking projects.

Moz, Similarweb and Surfer

Moz's server is official but in beta, limited to account owners. Entry is the Moz API Starter at $20/mo for 3,000 rows, with separate endpoints for Moz Data and Moz Local. Whether MCP calls consume API rows is not documented, which is a reason to start small.

Similarweb needs an API, Business or Enterprise plan with no public price. Its docs list 26 read-only tools, and a login without API access cannot connect.

Surfer went into beta on Aug 11, 2026 at $82/mo billed yearly. It exposes 55 tools, 22 of which create or change content inside Surfer, not on your published site. That is the interesting one for writers: the agent can draft and score content in the same session.

I found nothing on MCP support for Clearscope, Rankability or Jasper beyond Surfer's beta, so I would not assume it exists.

Other servers worth a look

Serpstat is credit-based, hosted or local. Nightwatch starts from EUR 79/mo and includes AI citation tracking. Screaming Frog, Ubersuggest and SpyFu appear in SEOmatic's comparison list, but I could not verify their official status. ContextBolt SEO ($35/mo) and SEOmatic publish the roundups that rank them, so discount those rankings. OpenSEO is listed at $10/mo.

Free servers for your own data

Your own Search Console data is the highest-value source, and it costs nothing.

  • Google Search Console MCP by Suganthan Mohanadasan is Apache-2.0 with 29 named analysis tools. It is community-built, not vendor-official. It needs Google Cloud OAuth credentials, the fiddliest install on this list. It cannot pull the AI Overviews and AI Mode report, because that report has no API, and its submit-URL tools use the Indexing API, which Google officially supports only for job posting and broadcast event pages.
  • Google Analytics MCP is official and free, and shows what visitors do after they land.

For WordPress, InstaWP suggests a stack: a free Search Console server for your data, Ahrefs or Semrush for research, and a WordPress site MCP so the agent can write the fix. That last piece matters, because research servers read and a CMS server acts.

Read-only versus write access

This is the safety question people skip.

ServerCan it change anything?
SemrushNo, strictly read-only
AhrefsMostly read-only; project and keyword list management is not documented as writing
SimilarwebNo
DataForSEONot your site, but it spends credits
SE RankingWrites to SE Ranking projects
SurferWrites content inside Surfer
WordPress or CMS MCPYes, changes your live site

Start with read-only servers. Add write access only when you have reviewed what the agent does for a week.

AI visibility and MCP

Traditional SEO servers tell you about Google rankings. For how you appear inside ChatGPT, Perplexity or AI Overviews you need a visibility platform. Promptwatch offers a hosted MCP server with 110+ tools and a REST API, so an agent can query your prompts, citations, crawler logs and traffic alongside Search Console data. Tools like it cover the part the SEO suites above handle thinly.

AI crawler behavior is one area where first-party data helps. In Promptwatch's AI crawler traffic report (IP-verified requests, Jun 8 to Sep 6, 2026), OpenAI made up 79.8% of requests in the week of Aug 31 to Sep 6, down from 94.8% in the week of Jun 8 to 14. The practical advice: check robots.txt, CDN and WAF rules for every major AI crawler. If a provider is a large share of the overall mix but near zero in your logs, you are probably blocking it. For a wider list of options, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com is a good next stop.

Which one should you install first?

  1. Everyone: the free Search Console MCP. Your own data beats any third party's estimates.
  2. Backlink and keyword research already on Ahrefs: use the Ahrefs server, but only on Lite ($129) or above, and expect the 100-row cap on Lite.
  3. Already on Semrush: enable the Semrush server and keep prompts narrow.
  4. Tight budget or high-volume SERP pulls: DataForSEO with a $50 top-up.
  5. Content-heavy team: try Surfer's beta, but treat it as unfinished.
  6. AI search visibility: add a platform with its own MCP, rather than expecting a classic SEO suite to cover it.

Setup tips that save time

  • Prefer hosted OAuth servers over local npm packages. Several local packages are archived or stale.
  • Cap rows and date ranges in every prompt. It saves units and avoids silent truncation.
  • Cross-check one answer against the vendor UI early on. I would do this for the first few queries, then stop once you trust the output.
  • Keep tool counts low. Clients with tool limits behave better with a focused set than with 160 tools loaded.
  • Re-verify pricing quarterly. MCP packaging is changing fast, and the numbers here are dated October 2026.

Final thoughts

The split that matters is not which suite has the most tools. It is whether the server reads, writes inside a vendor platform, or changes your site, and what it really costs to get in. Pair one free server for your own data with one paid research server, and keep write access narrow.
