Key takeaways
- Reddit's citation share is not one number. It differs by AI engine and it moves week to week, so a single blended figure will mislead you.
- Older stats (Reddit at 3.11% of citations across models in Profound's November 2025 study, or Perplexity at 46.5%) are historical. Promptwatch's August to October 2026 data shows ChatGPT's Reddit share collapsing.
- Measure Reddit as a daily series per engine, then segment cited URLs by subreddit, post age, upvotes and comment count.
- Before reacting to a drop, check collection volume and compare the Reddit URLs cited before and after the change.
- Tie citation data to your own prompt set and 3 to 5 named competitors, then watch which domains gained share when Reddit lost it.
Why the old Reddit numbers can't be trusted anymore
For a year, the standard advice was simple: Reddit is the most cited domain in AI search, so get on Reddit. Profound's November 2025 research, built on over 4 billion citations, put Reddit at 3.11% of citations across all models, ahead of YouTube (2.13%) and Wikipedia (1.35%). It ranked Reddit #1 on Perplexity and #2 on ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Grok.

That was a reasonable snapshot. It is not a reasonable snapshot now. Promptwatch Data shows reddit.com holding a steady 3.83% average share of ChatGPT citations from Jul 18 to Aug 7, 2026. Then on Aug 8 it slid into the mid 2s, and on Aug 14 it fell below 1%. The Aug 14 to 17 average was 0.52%, an 86.4% relative drop.
By Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, Promptwatch's social citation report had Reddit at just 0.09% of ChatGPT citations, down from 5.19% in the earlier edition. Averaged across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, Reddit is about 1.03%.
So if you are building a Reddit strategy from a blog post written in 2025, you are probably optimizing for a world that has changed. The fix isn't to find a newer stat and trust it blindly. The fix is to measure it yourself, continuously, per engine.
What the engines look like right now
Here is Reddit's position by engine, using Promptwatch Data for Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026 unless noted.
| Engine | Reddit share of citations | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 0.09% | All social platforms together are 0.46%, down from 5.8% in the earlier report |
| Google AI Overviews | 2.15% | Social platforms total 12.2%, about 26 times ChatGPT's share |
| Perplexity | 0.86% | Tied with LinkedIn; YouTube at 0.79% |
The gradual declines matter too. Between early July and August, AI Overviews moved from about 2.5% to about 2.1% (an 11.3% relative decline in the first-7-day versus last-7-day averages). Google AI Mode fell 30.5% over the same comparison, with the clearest step at the end of July.
Three engines, three different stories. That is the whole argument for per-engine measurement.
It is also worth knowing what else changed around then. On Aug 8, 2026, ChatGPT began using the site: operator at scale, jumping from about 0.4% to about 17% of fanout queries, per Promptwatch's report on the site: operator. The Reddit slide began the same day. Promptwatch is careful to say the chart shows when things changed, not why. A source selection change is the obvious candidate, but a data collection problem can't be ruled out. I'd hold that same uncertainty in my own reports.
Step 1: Freeze a prompt set
You can't measure a trend if the questions keep changing. Build a fixed set of 50 to 100 prompts that look like real buyer behavior:
- Category queries ("best [category] tools for [use case]")
- Comparison queries ("[brand] vs [competitor]")
- Problem queries ("how do I fix [pain point]")
- Brand queries ("is [brand] worth it")
This is the approach Soar Agency recommends in its 2026 evidence report: freeze the prompt set, tag which answers cite Reddit, identify the exact threads, and compare your presence against the 3 to 5 competitors your buyers already know.
Tag each prompt with a topic and intent, because Reddit tends to show up on subjective, trust-heavy questions (recommendations, complaints, comparisons) and rarely on definitional ones. If you only look at the blended number you'll miss that split.
One caution from practitioners: a Reddit thread on r/SEO pointed out that a single "percent visibility" number varies a lot across models, prompts and plain randomness. Run enough prompts, and look at trends, not single responses.
Step 2: Pull Reddit's share as a daily series, per engine
The core measurement is simple: for each engine, what share of citations goes to reddit.com on each day?
Promptwatch's own method advice for reading this kind of data is worth copying:
- Track each engine separately.
- Use rolling trends (a 7-day average) rather than single-day comparisons.
- Look at which domains gained share as Reddit declined.
- Break AI Mode share down by topic.
A blended number would have hidden the ChatGPT collapse behind steadier AI Overviews data. And a single-day comparison would have been noisy enough to argue about for weeks.
Tools that track real UI responses (not only API outputs) matter here, because user-facing answers and citations can differ from what the API returns. Promptwatch tracks the actual interfaces of ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot with citation trends by source type, which makes the daily series straightforward to build.

Other options in the same category include Profound, Peec AI and Otterly.AI. Most prompt trackers can give you a mention count. Fewer give you cited URLs and source-type breakdowns, which is what you need for the next steps.

If you want to compare more options, the directory at bestgeosoftware.com lists GEO platforms by feature.
Step 3: Rule out a data artifact before you react
If Reddit's share drops 86% in four days, the temptation is to rewrite the strategy on Monday. Don't. Promptwatch's report recommends two checks first:
- Check response and citation collection volume around the date of the change. If you collected half as many responses that week, the share is meaningless.
- Compare the Reddit URLs cited before and after. Was the loss broad, or limited to certain subreddits and topics?
A broad loss across many subreddits points to a source selection change at the engine. A narrow loss concentrated in one topic might be a quirk of your prompt set, or a single removed thread.
Because the size of the ChatGPT drop is still provisional per Promptwatch, this is the right posture: treat it as a strong signal, keep monitoring, and keep your decisions reversible.
Step 4: Segment the cited Reddit threads
Once you know Reddit is cited for some of your prompts, the useful question is which threads, and what they have in common. Segment the cited URLs by:
- Subreddit
- Post age
- Upvote count
- Comment count
What the thread data says
Promptwatch's Reddit in AI Search report (Dec 31 to Jan 31, 2026) analyzed what ChatGPT actually cited, and the results run against instinct:
| Metric | Finding |
|---|---|
| Upvotes | About 71% of cited posts had fewer than 10 upvotes; posts with 500+ upvotes were about 0.6% of citations |
| Comments | About 55% had fewer than 10 comments; threads with 250+ comments produced 0.05% of citations |
| Sweet spot | 5 to 20 substantive replies |
| Age | About 60% of cited posts were over six months old; posts 2+ years old were the largest bucket at about 22% |
| Fresh posts | About 11% were under a month old |
That is January data, and ChatGPT's Reddit behavior has changed since, so treat it as a picture of how Reddit citations worked rather than a current rule. It still tells you how to read your own thread data: viral threads are not what gets cited. Profound's research agrees on the age point, finding the average cited post was about a year old and 4% of cited posts dated from 2019 or earlier.
The practical consequence is that your current AI visibility on Reddit reflects a historical community footprint. A thread from two years ago that mentions you (or a competitor) may be doing more work than anything you posted last week.
Concentration in subreddits
Soar's April 20, 2026 snapshot of 1,000 tracked subreddits found the top 100 accounted for roughly 84% of observed brand-mention volume. You don't need to be everywhere on Reddit. You need to be in the handful of communities that get retrieved for your category. Your segmentation by subreddit will show you which ones.

Step 5: Measure sentiment and accuracy, not only presence
A citation is not automatically good news. Search Influence suggests asking three questions of any Reddit-influenced answer:
- Is the mention positive, neutral or negative?
- Are Reddit threads part of the citation set?
- Do third-party conversations support or contradict the claims on your own site?
The third one is underrated. If a heavily cited thread says your pricing is confusing or your product lacks a feature it now has, the AI answer will often repeat that. Promptwatch's report suggests correcting outdated claims in old threads that are still being cited, writing self-contained answers rather than baiting engagement, and never buying upvotes.
For brand-side listening beyond AI answers, tools like Brand24, Mention and Awario can surface Reddit threads about you that haven't been cited yet, so you know what might get pulled in later.
Step 6: Compare Reddit against what replaced it
When Reddit lost share in ChatGPT, that share went somewhere. Finding out where is half the value of the exercise.
Promptwatch Data gives some direction. In the Sep 28 to Oct 4 data, product pages are the most cited content type in ChatGPT at 22.4%, per its content type report. LinkedIn is now ChatGPT's top social platform at about 0.3%. For Google, YouTube (4.28%), Facebook (2.38%, more than doubled) and Instagram (1.61%) all out-cite Reddit in AI Overviews.
Promptwatch's own recommendations from that data are pretty clear:
- Don't rely on Reddit threads to get into ChatGPT any more.
- Invest in YouTube, Facebook and Instagram for Google.
- On Perplexity, publish on LinkedIn as well as Reddit.
Run the same comparison on your own prompt set. For each engine, list the top 10 cited domains before and after the date of change and note which types of source gained. If the winners are product pages and docs on brand-owned sites, your owned content just became more valuable.
Step 7: Connect citations to traffic
Citation share is a leading indicator, not a business result. Where possible, tie it to visits and conversions from AI platforms. Two things to look at:
- AI referral traffic in your analytics, segmented by source engine.
- AI crawler activity in your server logs, which tells you whether the engines are even reading your pages.
Platforms that bundle visitor analytics and crawler logs with citation data (Promptwatch does, as does a smaller set of competitors) let you see the whole chain from crawl to citation to click. If you only want crawler visibility, DarkVisitors is a lighter option.

And if you're already living in an SEO suite, Semrush and Ahrefs Brand Radar both added AI citation tracking, though with fixed prompt sets that make custom Reddit analysis harder.

A measurement setup you can run this month
| Step | What to do | Cadence |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Freeze 50 to 100 prompts, tagged by topic and intent | Once, review quarterly |
| 2 | Track Reddit's citation share per engine as a daily series | Daily, read weekly |
| 3 | Check collection volume and before/after URLs when share shifts | On any move over about 20% |
| 4 | Segment cited threads by subreddit, age, upvotes, comments | Monthly |
| 5 | Review sentiment and accuracy of cited threads | Monthly |
| 6 | Compare Reddit's change against domains that gained | Monthly |
| 7 | Tie citations to AI referral traffic and crawler logs | Monthly |
What I'd do with the results
If ChatGPT is a priority engine for you, Reddit is no longer the lever it was in early 2026, at least on current data. Put the effort into pages you own (product pages, landing pages, docs) and into correcting outdated claims where your brand is still being described.
If Google AI Overviews or Perplexity matter more, Reddit is still a real source there, at about 2.15% and 0.86% respectively. It is a smaller slice than the 2025 headlines suggested, and it can move again.
The honest conclusion is that nobody knows where Reddit's citation share goes next, so the durable move is the measurement habit itself: a frozen prompt set, per-engine daily series, and a before/after check whenever the line bends.
