Key takeaways
- Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell from a steady 3.83% average (July 18 to Aug 7, 2026) to 0.52% (Aug 14 to 17), per Promptwatch Data. That is an 86% relative drop in share of all ChatGPT citations.
- Social citations now vary wildly by engine. From Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, social platforms made up 0.46% of ChatGPT citations, 2.7% of Perplexity's and 12.2% of Google AI Overviews'.
- A useful platform tracks social sources per engine and per platform (Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook), not just a blended "citations" number.
- Pick tools that connect citations to action: which pages, which threads, which videos, and whether your fix changed anything.
- Do not build a ChatGPT strategy on Reddit threads right now. Put that effort into your own site and the formats ChatGPT cites.
What actually happened to Reddit in ChatGPT
For most of 2025 and early 2026, "get mentioned on Reddit" was close to a default GEO tactic. It made sense. Reddit was one of the most cited domains in ChatGPT.
Then August happened. According to Promptwatch Data's Reddit report, Reddit held a 3.83% average share of ChatGPT citations from July 18 to August 7, 2026. The slide started on August 8, when ChatGPT changed its query fanout behavior (the site: operator report covers that change). On August 14 the share dropped below 1%, and the August 14 to 17 average was 0.52%.
Axios picked it up on August 20, quoting Burson's Steve Rubel: don't pin your GEO hopes on one "mythical unicorn," because it's a long game across many channels.

Two numbers, two methods
You will see different figures floating around. Otterly.AI reported ChatGPT cutting Reddit citations by at least 73% in a single week, based on its own tracked prompts. Promptwatch's 86% figure is Reddit's share of all ChatGPT citations in its dataset. They measure different things, so don't mix them. Promptwatch also says the cause is not confirmed: a change in ChatGPT's source selection is the obvious candidate, but a data-collection issue can't be fully ruled out, so treat the exact size as provisional.
It also was not a Reddit-wide collapse across AI. In the same report, Reddit's share in AI Overviews slid gradually, from 2.37% to 2.10%, and in AI Mode from 2.22% to 1.54%. The Everything-PR write-up framed it as proof of how volatile GEO is, which is fair.

Where social platforms get cited now
The more useful question after the drop is what the whole social picture looks like. Promptwatch's October 2026 social citations report (Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026) gives the clearest snapshot I have seen.
| Engine | Social share of citations | Notable detail |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 0.46% | Reddit fell from 5.19% to 0.09%; LinkedIn is now top social platform at 0.3% |
| Perplexity | 2.7% | LinkedIn and Reddit tie at 0.86%; YouTube 0.79%, down from 2.67% |
| Google AI Overviews | 12.2% | YouTube 4.28%, Facebook 2.38%, Reddit 2.15%, Instagram 1.61%, LinkedIn 1.55%, TikTok 0.22% |
Across all three engines, the average share by platform was YouTube 1.70%, Reddit 1.03%, LinkedIn 0.90%, Facebook 0.81%, Instagram 0.56%, TikTok 0.07% and X 0.04%.
The practical read:
- For Google surfaces, YouTube first, then keep public Facebook and Instagram profiles complete and active.
- For ChatGPT, stop leaning on Reddit threads. Product pages, landing pages and listicles earn the citations; see the content type report, where product pages hold 22.4%.
- For Perplexity, publish on LinkedIn as well as Reddit.
- Leave X out of AI search plans.
This is the reason a blended "AI visibility score" is no longer enough. If your tool can't split social citations by engine and platform, you would have missed the whole story above, or found out weeks late.
What to look for in a platform
Before the list, here is the checklist I would use. Most tools tick two or three boxes. Few tick all of them.
- Per-engine, per-source reporting. You need ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Perplexity separated, and sources classified (Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, news, your own site).
- Real interface data. User-facing answers and citations can differ from API output. A tool that only calls APIs can show you a calmer picture than your customers see.
- Citation trends over time. The Reddit drop was a cliff on a specific date. You want daily or weekly history so you can tell a platform change from your own problem.
- URL-level detail. Which thread, which video, which LinkedIn post. Not just "Reddit: 3%".
- Your own accounts. The ability to filter to your channels so you can see whether your YouTube videos or LinkedIn posts are the ones cited.
- Crawler logs and traffic. Citations are the middle of the funnel. Whether AI bots read your pages and whether visits convert is the rest.
- A way to act. Content gaps, briefs, publishing. Otherwise you have an expensive dashboard.
I did not verify vendor pricing for most tools below, so check each pricing page before you commit.
The platforms worth shortlisting
Promptwatch
Promptwatch is the one I would start with for this specific problem, partly because its research is what surfaced the Reddit drop in the first place. It tracks the real interfaces of ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and others, and has dedicated Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports, plus a "My channels" filter so you can see which of your own accounts and videos get cited. Every citation is classified by content type and source type, so you can watch a source like Reddit fade (or not) per engine.
What sets it apart from pure trackers is the rest of the loop: IP-verified AI crawler logs, visitor analytics for AI traffic, an Action Board of prioritized fixes, and a Content Agent that writes and publishes to WordPress, Webflow or Framer. Paid plans start at $95/month (Essential), with a free Explore tier for a single project. Confirm current pricing at promptwatch.com/pricing.

Profound
A strong monitoring platform with enterprise positioning. It covers the main AI engines and is a common pick for larger brands, though it sits at a higher price point and is more monitoring than execution.
Otterly.AI
Otterly published its own analysis of the Reddit drop, so it clearly has the data to look at it. It is an affordable prompt tracker, good for teams that want brand mention and citation monitoring without the heavier stack. Expect less on crawler logs and content execution.

Peec AI
Clean, multi-language tracking with a focus on prompts, visibility and sources. A reasonable middle option for agencies that need to report across markets.
Scrunch AI
Monitoring-focused with some content-side thinking. Worth a demo if you care about how AI agents see your site, but check how granular its social source reporting is.
AthenaHQ
Tracks visibility across a number of AI engines and leans toward optimization recommendations. Compare its source breakdown against what you need for social platforms.
Semrush and Ahrefs Brand Radar
If your team already lives in an SEO suite, both add AI visibility tracking to a familiar workflow. The trade-off is usually fixed prompt sets and shallower AI-specific data. A Reddit thread in r/SEO mentions Semrush giving basic tracking numbers for free with the full report paid, which matches how most people use it: a first look, not a deep source analysis.

Mentionova
A smaller player pitching six-engine tracking with Reddit workflows. Interesting if Reddit is your main concern, but given ChatGPT's shift, make sure it also covers YouTube, LinkedIn and Facebook.

Brandlight and Bluefish
Both aim at enterprise brand teams. They are more niche than the options above, so check carefully for per-engine social source reporting before buying.

Side-by-side comparison
This is my read from public positioning, not a hands-on test of every feature. Verify details with each vendor.
| Platform | Per-engine citation sources | Reddit/YouTube/LinkedIn reports | Crawler logs | Content execution | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | Yes, real UI data | Dedicated reports, "My channels" | Yes, IP-verified | Content Agent, Action Board | Teams that want to fix gaps, not just see them |
| Profound | Yes | Check with vendor | Limited | Limited | Large enterprises |
| Otterly.AI | Yes | Source tracking, less granular | No | No | Budget monitoring |
| Peec AI | Yes | Source-level | No | No | Multi-language reporting |
| Scrunch AI | Yes | Check with vendor | Partial | Some | Brand and agent-experience teams |
| AthenaHQ | Yes | Check with vendor | No | Some | Optimization recommendations |
| Semrush / Ahrefs | Fixed prompt sets | Shallow | No | Suite tools | Existing SEO-suite users |
| Mentionova | Six engines | Reddit workflows | No | Reddit-focused | Reddit-heavy strategies |
More options are listed in the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com, and the AI rank tracking directory is useful if you mainly need monitoring.
Adjacent tools that help, but are not a replacement
Classic social listening tools such as Brand24, Meltwater and Brandwatch track what people say on Reddit and social platforms. That is a different job from tracking what AI cites. They tell you about conversations; they do not tell you whether ChatGPT used those conversations as a source. Use them alongside an AI visibility platform, not instead of one.
How to adjust your strategy after the Reddit drop
Check your own data first
Before reacting, compare the Reddit URLs cited before and after August 14 in your tracking, and look at collection volume around that date. Promptwatch itself recommends this, since a data issue can't be fully excluded. If your own prompts show the same pattern, believe it.
Rebalance by engine
Treat each engine as its own channel. A rough starting split based on the October data:
- ChatGPT: your own site, product and landing pages, comparisons, docs. Almost half of ChatGPT responses cite 10 or more unique domains (report), so there is room for you in a long list.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: YouTube videos, plus maintained Facebook and Instagram profiles.
- Perplexity: LinkedIn and Reddit both.
Don't abandon Reddit entirely
Reddit still earns citations in Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode, and it shapes what real buyers read. I would stop treating it as a ChatGPT growth lever, not stop participating. Honest community presence is still worth something. Just don't staff it as if ChatGPT citations depend on it.
Expect more swings
The same period saw ChatGPT start using the site: operator at scale and Meta-WebIndexer jump from about 2% to nearly 38% of tracked AI crawler requests (report). Sources and crawlers move fast. Tracking weekly beats auditing quarterly.
Quick buying guide
- You need to understand and fix visibility end to end: Promptwatch.
- You want cheap monitoring and little else: Otterly.AI or Peec AI.
- You are an enterprise team with a big budget: Profound is worth a demo next to Promptwatch's Business and Enterprise tiers.
- You live inside an SEO suite already: try the AI add-on of Semrush or Ahrefs first, then see what is missing.
- Reddit is central to your strategy: make sure whichever tool you choose shows Reddit by engine, over time. Otherwise you will miss the next drop.
If you would rather hand the strategy to people, agencies like 1001 SEO Media run GEO programs and use Promptwatch for the tracking side.
Bottom line
The Reddit drop is a good stress test for any AI visibility tool. If it could not show you the cliff on August 14, split by engine, it will not catch the next one either. Pick a platform that reports social sources per engine, keeps history, and connects what it finds to a fix. Then re-check your assumptions every few weeks, because the numbers above will already look different by the time you read this.
