Key takeaways
- Yoast, AIOSEO and Rank Math are still the three plugins most people should shortlist. All three now ship AI features, llms.txt support, or AI-agent integrations.
- AIOSEO's advertised prices are 50% off the first year. Renewals are at full price, so budget for that.
- ClickRank positions itself as an AI automation layer, but its claims come from its own blog. Test it on a staging site before trusting it.
- A plugin changes your site. It does not tell you whether ChatGPT or Perplexity cites you. You need a separate tracking tool for that.
- Always review AI-written titles and meta descriptions by hand. Bulk generation is fast and occasionally wrong.
What "AI SEO" means for a WordPress plugin in 2026
The phrase covers three different things, and plugins mix them freely.
First, AI writing help inside the editor: generating titles, meta descriptions, alt text, FAQs. Second, AI-readiness for the site itself: llms.txt files, crawler controls, schema, and connections that let tools like Claude or ChatGPT edit SEO settings. Third, AI visibility, meaning whether answer engines actually mention and cite you. Plugins handle the first two reasonably well. Almost none handle the third.
That third point matters because the crawling side of the web is shifting quickly. According to Promptwatch Data's AI crawler report (weekly IP-verified requests, June 8 to September 6, 2026), OpenAI's share of verified AI crawler requests fell from 94.8% in the week of June 8 to 14 to 79.8% in the week of August 31 to September 6. The mix is spreading across Anthropic, Google, Perplexity and Mistral. If your robots.txt or CDN rules only anticipated one bot, you probably have gaps.

Yoast SEO
Yoast is the plugin most people have heard of, and it still earns that reputation on one thing: it explains its advice. The readability and SEO analysis tells you what to change and why, which is useful if you are training a team of writers.
On the AI side, Yoast's own comparison page lists AI Generate, AI Optimize and AI Summarize, plus an AI Content Planner and AI Bulk Editor in Premium. It also has free "Yoast SEO Abilities", which lets an AI tool read and fix a post's core technical SEO settings. The free plugin gained an llms.txt feature in June 2025.
Pricing changed in July 2025. Products were consolidated into Yoast SEO Premium and Yoast WooCommerce SEO. Premium went from 99 to 118.80 a year with Local, News and Video bundled in. WooCommerce SEO is 178.80 a year. Prices exclude VAT. That announcement is not from 2026, so confirm current figures before buying.
Premium also includes a crawl optimization setting that lets you indicate which content should not be used to train LLMs. That is a nice control to have, though it is a signal, not enforcement.
Worth knowing: Yoast AI+ adds brand visibility monitoring across AI platforms. I would still compare it to dedicated trackers before committing, since monitoring is a different job from on-page optimization.
AIOSEO
AIOSEO claims 3 million+ users and it is the easiest of the big three to set up. Its feature list is long, and in 2026 it has leaned hard into AI plumbing.

What stands out:
- An AI Assistant that generates titles, meta descriptions and alt text in bulk across many posts at once, using credits.
- An LLMs.txt generator.
- AIOSEO MCP, which connects Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Gemini to your site so an agent can fix meta descriptions or build redirects from chat. AIOSEO says it is free on every plan, including Lite.
- A free REST API with 28 SEO abilities for headless workflows.
- Search Statistics (Google Search Console inside WordPress), a Redirection Manager, WooCommerce SEO and Author SEO for E-E-A-T.
AIOSEO pricing, and the catch
The pricing page shows 50% off the first year. Renewals are at full price.
| Plan | Intro price | Normal price | Sites | AI credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $49.50/yr | $99 | 1 | 10,000 |
| Plus | $99.50/yr | $199 | 3 | 25,000 |
| Pro | $199.50/yr | $399 | 10 | 50,000 |
| Elite | $299.50/yr | $599 | 100 | 200,000 |
The tiers matter. Local SEO and Author SEO start at Plus. The Internal Link Assistant and orphaned post reports start at Pro. Keyword rank tracking and Content Decay tracking are Elite only. Also, the AI Writing Assistant for full drafts needs a separate paid SEOBoost subscription. Some roundups still quote a flat $99 a year, which is out of date.
Rank Math
Rank Math came up repeatedly in the sources. On Reddit, commenters call Rank Math and Yoast the strongest all-around options, with Rank Math standing out for schema support and entity focus. Zapier recommends it for rank tracking and reporting inside WordPress and notes an extensive free feature set, with premium from $8.99 a month billed annually. I did not verify that price independently.
It is a better fit than Yoast if you are comfortable with a denser settings screen and want more switches for free. The setup difficulty is rated medium by comparison sites, which matches my experience: more options, more ways to misconfigure.
ClickRank
ClickRank is the newer name in this list. Its pitch is AI automation for metadata, CTR optimization and crawl control, rather than a classic editor-side checklist.

I would be careful here. Everything I could find about ClickRank comes from ClickRank itself, including its claim to be the standout for AI-powered automation. I found no independent tests or verified pricing. That does not make it bad. It means you should run it on a staging copy, check what it actually rewrites, and compare the output to what your current plugin produces before you let it touch production metadata.
Other options worth a look
A few tools in our catalog cover jobs a core SEO plugin does not.
For content scoring and briefs, Surfer SEO and Clearscope are the usual picks.

For entity-based internal linking and schema, InLinks works alongside a WordPress plugin rather than replacing it.
For crawling your site and finding what a plugin missed, Screaming Frog is still the standard.

For automated on-page changes at scale, Alli AI is built around that workflow.
For a free llms.txt generator and validator outside WordPress, llmtxt.info does the job.

If you want a wider view of the category, the directory at surferstack.com lists many more SEO tools with reviews and alternatives.
How to choose
Pick by who is doing the work, not by feature count.
- A beginner or small business owner: AIOSEO or Yoast. Both get you a working setup in minutes.
- A writer-heavy team that needs coaching: Yoast, because the feedback explains itself.
- A technically comfortable user who wants more for free: Rank Math.
- Someone hoping to automate metadata at scale: test ClickRank, and also try AIOSEO's bulk AI Assistant, which is better documented.
- A developer or agency wiring agents into WordPress: AIOSEO MCP and its REST API, or Yoast's free Abilities integration.
Do not run two SEO plugins at once. Both will output title tags and schema, and the duplicates cause real problems. Yoast's import tool supports AIOSEO, and AIOSEO has its own migration guide from Yoast, so switching is not painful.
Pitfalls to avoid
AI metadata needs a human pass
Bulk generation is a time saver and a risk. Titles can come out samey, descriptions can overclaim, and alt text can describe the wrong thing. Spot-check a sample of every batch, then edit the pages that matter most by hand.
Credit limits and renewals
AIOSEO's AI is credit-based. If you generate in bulk across a large site, you can burn through Basic's 10,000 credits faster than you expect. And remember the intro price doubles at renewal.
Blocking AI crawlers by accident
A robots.txt rule, a CDN setting or a WAF can block AI bots without you noticing. Promptwatch's own guidance on its crawler data is to review robots.txt, CDN and WAF rules for every AI provider, then compare your logs to the overall mix. A provider that is large in the report but near zero in your logs suggests you are blocked or unreachable. If you block bots entirely, you can drop out of AI answers.
llms.txt is not a ranking lever
Both Yoast and AIOSEO now generate llms.txt. It is cheap to turn on, so do it. But do not expect it to move citations on its own. Promptwatch's Markdown in AI Search report found markdown files make up just 0.05% of AI search citations, which suggests markdown serves AI agents more than AI search.
Checking whether any of it worked
A plugin can set up your titles, schema and sitemaps. It cannot tell you whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews mention you. For that you need a visibility tracker.
What gets cited also does not follow the old rules neatly. Promptwatch Data found product pages were the most cited content type in ChatGPT (22.4% of citations, September 28 to October 4, 2026), followed by landing pages and listicles. Its domain rank data showed sites with domain rank 46 to 75 earned almost half of ChatGPT citations in August 2026. So a mid-sized WordPress site is not shut out.
Promptwatch is one option for tracking this. It monitors the real interfaces of ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and others, shows IP-verified AI crawler logs, and has a WordPress plugin for crawler data and CMS publishing.

Other trackers in the catalog are lighter-weight. Otterly.AI and Peec AI are prompt trackers aimed at monitoring only.

For a broader list of options, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com is a good place to compare.
If you would rather hand the whole thing to specialists, 1001 SEO Media runs technical SEO and generative engine optimization for brands that want both Google rankings and AI citations. It is the agency that publishes this site, so weigh that accordingly.
A simple setup order
- Choose one core plugin (Yoast, AIOSEO or Rank Math) and import settings from the old one.
- Connect Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Turn on XML sitemaps, schema and llms.txt.
- Check robots.txt, CDN and WAF rules for every AI crawler you want to allow.
- Use AI generation for first drafts of titles and descriptions only, and review them.
- Track AI citations monthly so you can see which changes mattered.
Bottom line
For most people, AIOSEO is the easiest start, Yoast is best for teams that want coaching, and Rank Math gives the most for free. ClickRank is worth a staging-site test but not a leap of faith. And whichever you choose, treat the plugin as plumbing: it makes your site readable, and a separate tool tells you whether AI engines are actually reading it.
