Key takeaways
- The "Reddit dominates AI search" story is out of date. In Promptwatch Data for Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell from 5.19% to 0.09%.
- Which platform wins depends on the engine. YouTube leads in Google AI Overviews (4.28%), LinkedIn leads social in ChatGPT (0.3%), and LinkedIn and Reddit tie in Perplexity (0.86% each).
- ChatGPT now gets only 0.46% of its citations from social platforms. AI Overviews gets 12.2%, about 26 times more.
- On LinkedIn, Pulse articles and posts still earn the most citations, but company pages are rising. Engagement metrics barely correlate with being cited.
- Treat AI search as several channels, not one. Pick platforms per engine, then measure.
The story changed in the middle of 2026
If you read a social-citation study from early 2026, you came away believing Reddit owned AI search. Wellows analyzed more than 350,000 citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode in January and February 2026, and found Reddit above 50% of social citations. YouTube grew fastest, and LinkedIn sat in a steady third place.

That was a fair snapshot of its moment. It is not a fair picture of October. Between those studies, ChatGPT changed how it searches and what it cites, and the ranking of social platforms shuffled. I would not build a content plan on any single study, including this guide, without checking the date on the numbers.
So here is the current picture, engine by engine, followed by what to do about it.
What the latest numbers say
The cleanest recent source is Promptwatch Data's social media citations report for Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026. Averaged across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, the share of all citations looks like this:
| Platform | Average share of citations (3 engines) |
|---|---|
| YouTube | 1.70% |
| 1.03% | |
| 0.90% | |
| 0.81% | |
| 0.56% | |
| TikTok | 0.07% |
| X | 0.04% |
Those are small numbers because they are shares of every citation, not just social ones. The interesting part is how unevenly they split across engines.
| Engine | Social share of all citations | Leading social platforms |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 0.46% | LinkedIn 0.3%, Reddit 0.09% |
| Google AI Overviews | 12.2% | YouTube 4.28%, Facebook 2.38%, Reddit 2.15%, Instagram 1.61%, LinkedIn 1.55% |
| Perplexity | 2.7% | LinkedIn 0.86%, Reddit 0.86%, YouTube 0.79% |
Two things jump out. First, ChatGPT has more or less stopped citing social media. In the earlier Promptwatch report the seven platforms together made up 5.8% of its citations. Now they are 0.46%. Second, AI Overviews is the social-friendly engine, and Facebook has quietly passed Reddit there.
Reddit: from the default answer to a Perplexity and Google play
Reddit's collapse in ChatGPT is the biggest shift in this whole space. Promptwatch's report on Reddit citations in ChatGPT shows reddit.com holding a steady 3.83% share from Jul 18 to Aug 7, 2026. On Aug 8, the same day ChatGPT changed its query fanout behavior, the share fell to the mid-2s. On Aug 14 it dropped below 1%, and the Aug 14 to 17 average was 0.52%, an 86.4% relative drop. (That day-of-change timing also lines up with ChatGPT's site: operator rollout, where site: queries went from about 0.4% to about 17% of fanout queries.)
Promptwatch itself flags the size of the drop as provisional, since a data-collection issue can't be fully ruled out. Even so, the direction matches the October numbers: 0.09% for Reddit in ChatGPT.
Google's engines are more forgiving, but not immune:
- AI Overviews: Reddit slid gradually from about 2.37% to 2.10% (an 11.3% relative decline).
- AI Mode: Reddit fell from 2.22% to 1.54% (a 30.5% relative decline), with the clearest step down at the end of July.
So where does Reddit still matter? Perplexity, where it ties LinkedIn at 0.86%, and Google's surfaces. Reddit threads are also still a place where buyers form opinions, which is a different job from earning a citation. But if your plan was "get mentioned on Reddit so ChatGPT recommends us," that plan has weakened a lot. Promptwatch's own advice from the report is blunt: don't count on Reddit threads to get you into ChatGPT.
For tracking this at the thread level, tools like Promptwatch report which subreddits, videos and LinkedIn posts AI engines cite, and let you filter to your own accounts.

YouTube: strong on Google, volatile elsewhere
The story in January was YouTube overtaking Reddit. Bluefish, cited by Adweek, found YouTube in 16% of LLM answers over six months versus 10% for Reddit. Wellows saw YouTube citations rise from 27,203 to 42,262 between January and February, over 55% month over month. Transcripts and descriptions give models plenty of text to read, and video is a natural source for explanations and comparisons.
The October data adds a caution. YouTube leads AI Overviews at 4.28%, which makes sense given Google owns the platform. On Perplexity, though, YouTube fell from 2.67% to 0.79% between the two Promptwatch reports. So "YouTube is simply growing" is too tidy. It is dominant on Google and has been unstable elsewhere.
For the deeper channel-level picture, there is also Promptwatch's YouTube in AI search report from February 2026.
Practical read: if your buyers search on Google, YouTube is the first social platform to invest in. Write transcripts that stand on their own, use descriptive titles and put the answer early in the description.
LinkedIn: the quiet winner in ChatGPT and Perplexity
LinkedIn is the one platform that holds up everywhere. It is ChatGPT's most cited social platform (0.3%), ties Reddit as the top social source in Perplexity (0.86%), and sits at 1.55% in AI Overviews. In January and February, Wellows described it as a stable trust layer, with citations moving from 24,928 to 25,211, tied to identifiable professionals and B2B queries.
OtterlyAI's study of 1,310,455 LinkedIn citations found the platform's share of social citations rising from 7.8% in January to 11.7% in May 2026, with monthly citations up 49.9%. By platform, Perplexity accounted for 43.3% of LinkedIn citations, AI Overviews 22.2%, ChatGPT 18.7%, AI Mode 9.0% and Copilot 6.8%. Gemini cited LinkedIn only 38 times.

OtterlyAI also found that likes, comments, emojis and hashtags correlate close to zero with citations. What gets a post liked is not what gets it cited. Reference value and extractability matter more than audience size.
Which LinkedIn formats get cited
Here the two datasets disagree, and the reason matters. OtterlyAI excluded non-content pages like job posts and company pages, and found Pulse articles taking 72.2% of the remaining content citations. Promptwatch's August 2026 LinkedIn page-type report counts everything, with a newer window, and finds Pulse at 30.41% of all LinkedIn citations, posts at 27.75% and company pages at 18.05% (up from 13.35%). Different denominators, different windows. I'd weight the newer data more heavily, but both agree Pulse and posts are the main content formats.
By engine, from Promptwatch's August data:
| Engine | Pulse articles | Posts | Company pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 3.65% | 26.45% | 33.68% |
| AI Mode | 34.66% | 24.39% | 13.53% |
| AI Overviews | 34.51% | 23.06% | 14.46% |
| Perplexity | 26.01% | 37.32% | 22.03% |
The ChatGPT row is the surprise. Pulse articles dropped from 8.77% to 3.65%, while company pages rose to 33.68%. Promptwatch advises against publishing Pulse articles specifically for ChatGPT visibility. Perplexity is the one engine where posts beat Pulse. In AI Overviews, top-content pages (accounts LinkedIn ranks as leading voices on a topic) hit 5.15%, the highest of any engine.
One exception to the Pulse trend: Microsoft Copilot. OtterlyAI found Pulse making up 90.2% of Copilot's LinkedIn citations, which fits Microsoft owning LinkedIn.
Which platform for which engine
| If your buyers use | Start with | Then | Skip or deprioritize |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | LinkedIn company page and posts | Your own site (product pages and docs get cited most) | Reddit threads, Pulse articles |
| Google AI Overviews / AI Mode | YouTube | Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn Pulse | X |
| Perplexity | LinkedIn posts and Reddit | Company pages | X, TikTok |
| Copilot | LinkedIn Pulse articles | Your own site | Most other social |
| Gemini | Your own site and YouTube | n/a | LinkedIn (38 citations in OtterlyAI's data) |
The ChatGPT column deserves a note. Social is a rounding error there. In Promptwatch's content-type data, product pages are the most cited type at 22.4% of citations (Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026). If ChatGPT is your main target, your own pages matter more than any social profile.
A playbook that survives the next shuffle
The platform ranking has already flipped twice this year. Rather than chase it, I'd do the following.
- Pick engines first. Find out which AI engines your buyers actually use, then map platforms to them using the table above.
- Publish extractable content. Whether it is a Pulse article, a LinkedIn post or a video description, lead with the answer, use clear headings and include specifics. Engagement bait does nothing for citations.
- Attach it to real people. Named individuals account for 87.8% of cited LinkedIn content URLs in OtterlyAI's data, and 91.7% of citations. Employee and founder posts outperform anonymous brand output.
- Keep company pages complete. They are rising in ChatGPT and Perplexity, and they take little effort.
- Re-measure monthly. A 0.5% share can double or vanish in weeks. Look at the citation data per engine, not a blended number.
- Keep your own site strong. Social is the minority of citations everywhere except AI Overviews. Crawlability, product pages and documentation still carry most of the weight.
Tools to track social citations
You cannot manage this by checking ChatGPT by hand. A tracker should show per-engine citation sources, and ideally break out Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn separately.
Promptwatch covers Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports and also logs AI crawler visits, which helps tell "not cited" apart from "not crawled." Its Action Board turns gaps into a to-do list.
Others worth a look, depending on budget and focus:

Otterly.AI is an affordable monitor, and its own LinkedIn and YouTube studies are a useful data source.
Profound is a broader enterprise-oriented tracker.
Peec AI is a multi-language prompt tracker, and its analysis of 30 million sources found Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn as the most cited social domains.
Wellows publishes social citation research and offers visibility tracking for brands and agencies.
| Tool | Best for | Social-source detail |
|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | Tracking plus fixing visibility gaps | Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports, crawler logs |
| Otterly.AI | Lower-cost monitoring | Citation tracking across engines |
| Profound | Enterprise monitoring | Multi-engine citation tracking |
| Peec AI | Multi-language tracking | Prompt-level visibility |
| Wellows | Agencies and brand tracking | Visibility tracking, social research |

Caveats worth keeping in mind
- Studies disagree because they measure different things. Share of social citations (Wellows, OtterlyAI) is not share of all citations (Promptwatch). Compare within a study, not across them.
- Windows are short. The Promptwatch social report covers one week. Treat it as a snapshot and check the Promptwatch Data hub for newer cuts.
- Citation is not traffic or revenue. A cited LinkedIn post may drive nothing. Measure visits and conversions from AI engines, not just mentions.
Bottom line
Reddit is no longer the default social source in AI search. In ChatGPT it has nearly disappeared, in Perplexity it ties LinkedIn, and in Google's engines it trails YouTube and, in AI Overviews, Facebook. YouTube is the best bet for Google. LinkedIn is the most consistent across engines, especially for B2B. Pick by engine, publish content that can be quoted, and check the numbers again next month.
