Reddit Citations by AI Model in 2026: ChatGPT vs AI Overviews vs Perplexity

Reddit's role in AI answers has changed fast. Promptwatch Data from October 2026 shows ChatGPT barely cites it, while AI Overviews and Perplexity still do. Here is what each engine does and what to do about it.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT has nearly stopped citing Reddit. In Promptwatch's Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026 data, reddit.com was 0.09% of ChatGPT citations, down from 5.19% in the earlier report.
  • Google AI Overviews gets 12.2% of its citations from social platforms, roughly 26 times ChatGPT's share. Reddit is 2.15% of that, and YouTube leads at 4.28%.
  • Perplexity cites Reddit and LinkedIn equally (0.86% each). Its social share overall is 2.7%.
  • Older claims that Reddit is 46.7% of Perplexity citations or about 5% of ChatGPT citations are stale. Don't build a 2026 plan on them.
  • Reddit still works as a compounding asset for some engines, but each model needs a different channel mix.

Why the old Reddit story stopped being true

For most of 2025 and early 2026, the standard advice was simple: get on Reddit, because AI search loves Reddit. You can still find that advice everywhere. Some articles claim Reddit makes up 46.7% of Perplexity citations. Others say Reddit appears in 92.8% of AI search opportunities. A Reddit commenter in the research I pulled quoted a 24% Perplexity share for January.

Those numbers come from third-party studies run on older data, and they don't match what first-party citation tracking shows now. The most recent report from Promptwatch Data, covering Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, paints a very different picture. Reddit is about 1% of citations on average across the three engines. YouTube is slightly ahead.

So the honest answer to "does Reddit still matter in AI search?" is: it depends which engine you mean, and the gap between engines is now enormous.

The screenshot above is one of the popular "Reddit dominates" pieces. It is worth reading for the forum-quality discussion, but its headline claim reflects an earlier period, so check any citation figure against the date it was measured.

Reddit citations by model: the current numbers

The table below uses Promptwatch's Social Media Citations by AI Model report for October 2026, which covers Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026.

Two things jump out. First, YouTube now beats Reddit on average. If you have been treating Reddit as the number one social source for AI search, that is out of date. Even Promptwatch's own January 2026 Reddit report still says Reddit is the top social platform cited by AI search engines, which the newer data contradicts.

Second, the spread between engines is larger than the spread between platforms. AI Overviews hands out social citations across six or seven platforms. ChatGPT barely uses any.

ChatGPT: what happened to Reddit

This is the dramatic one. In Promptwatch's report on Reddit citations dropping in ChatGPT (Jul 7 to Aug 17, 2026), reddit.com held a steady 3.83% average share from Jul 18 to Aug 7. On Aug 8 it slipped into the mid-2s. On Aug 14 it fell below 1%. The Aug 14 to 17 average was 0.52%, an 86.4% relative drop.

Aug 8 is also the day ChatGPT changed its query fan-out behavior. Promptwatch's site: operator report shows ChatGPT Search started using the site: operator at scale that day, jumping from roughly 0.4% to about 17% of all fan-out queries overnight, with searches per response nearly doubling.

Is the timing a coincidence? Possibly not, but nobody has established the cause. Promptwatch lists a change in source selection as the obvious candidate and says a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out, so the size of the drop is provisional. I would treat the direction as reliable (the later October data confirms it, at 0.09%) and the explanation as unknown.

What replaced Reddit? ChatGPT's citation mix leans on commercial and reference content. In Promptwatch's content type report, product pages are the most cited type at 22.4%, followed by landing pages and listicles. Domain rank matters less than people think, too: mid-authority sites (DR 46-75) earned almost half of ChatGPT citations in August 2026.

The practical read: if your goal is ChatGPT visibility, Reddit threads are now a poor use of the hour. Put that effort into your own site and into listicles, guides and comparisons, which is also Promptwatch's own recommendation.

Google AI Overviews: the social-friendly engine

AI Overviews is the outlier. Social platforms make up 12.2% of its citations, and the mix is broad: YouTube 4.28%, Facebook 2.38% (more than double its earlier share), Reddit 2.15%, Instagram 1.61%, LinkedIn 1.55%. TikTok shows up here and nowhere else, at 0.22%.

Reddit's decline here has been gradual rather than a cliff. In the same August report, the AI Overviews share averaged 2.37% in the first seven days of the period and 2.10% in the last seven, an 11.3% relative decline. Google's AI Mode fell harder, 30.5% relative (2.22% to 1.54%), with the clearest step at the end of July.

So Reddit is still a real source for Google, just a smaller one than it was in early July when the share was about 2.5%. A decline of roughly 10 to 30 percent is a very different story from an 86% collapse.

One caveat: AI Overviews and AI Mode don't cite the same URLs very often. A third-party benchmark in my research put the overlap at 13.7%. That figure is not from Promptwatch Data, so treat it as a rough indicator, but it matches the general observation that you shouldn't assume one Google AI surface behaves like the other.

Perplexity: smaller social share, more even split

Perplexity sits in the middle. Social platforms are 2.7% of its citations. Reddit and LinkedIn tie at 0.86%, YouTube is 0.79% (down from 2.67% in the earlier report), and X peaks at about 0.1% here.

The interesting bit is LinkedIn drawing even with Reddit. If you do B2B work, that is a useful nudge. Promptwatch's advice for Perplexity is to publish on LinkedIn as well as Reddit. Its LinkedIn citation page type data breaks down which LinkedIn formats AI engines cite, if you want to see whether articles, posts or company pages are worth the time.

Older third-party reports said Reddit was about 46.5% of Perplexity's top citations, and that fresh content under 30 days got 3.2x more citations. The freshness claim is plausible and consistent with how Perplexity retrieves content live. The Reddit share is not what current first-party data shows.

What kind of Reddit thread actually gets cited

The engines differ, but the nature of a cited thread is surprisingly consistent. Promptwatch's Reddit in AI Search report for January 2026 looked at what ChatGPT was citing back when it cited Reddit more, and the findings are counterintuitive:

  • About 71% of cited posts had fewer than 10 upvotes. Posts with 500+ upvotes were about 0.6% of citations.
  • About 55% of cited posts had fewer than 10 comments, and about 90% had fewer than 50. Threads with 250+ comments produced 0.05% of citations. The sweet spot is 5 to 20 substantive replies.
  • Age matters less than you would expect. About 60% of cited posts were more than 6 months old, and posts 2+ years old were the largest bucket at about 22%. Only about 11% were under a month old.

That last point cuts against the freshness story. Old, specific threads keep getting cited. A well-sourced reply on an outdated thread is a legitimate play. Popularity is not the filter, which tells you AI engines pick on relevance and structure rather than community approval. A forum commenter in my research made the same point: most Reddit citations by ChatGPT pointed to specific discussion threads, not brand pages or subreddit homepages.

If you do participate, the advice from that report holds up:

  1. Write one self-contained, complete answer per thread.
  2. Treat participation as a compounding asset, not a campaign.
  3. Correct outdated threads with a current, sourced reply.
  4. Don't buy or bait engagement.

Which channels to prioritize per engine

Get cited in PerplexityLinkedIn and Reddit, plus fresh, well-structured pagesEqual to LinkedIn (0.86%)
Any engineSkip X in AI search plansNot relevant

This maps closely to Promptwatch's own recommendations: don't rely on Reddit for ChatGPT, publish on LinkedIn and Reddit for Perplexity, and put YouTube first for Google.

There is also a trust problem worth keeping in mind as a reader of AI answers. A citation means a thread was relevant, not that it was right. AI engines select content on structural signals, not fact checking. If you rely on a cited thread, check whether the answer links evidence, mentions limitations and has dissenting replies.

How to track your own Reddit citations

The numbers above are averages across big prompt sets. Your category could look very different. Healthcare prompts in ChatGPT lean on NIH, the FDA and the NHS, travel leans on booking sites, and software leans on GitHub, docs and G2, per Promptwatch's category reports. Social platforms barely register in those lists, so you can't assume a global average applies to your niche.

To see your own picture you need tracking that checks which specific Reddit threads, YouTube videos and LinkedIn posts get cited for your prompts, per engine, over time. A few ways to do that:

Promptwatch has dedicated Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports, plus a "My channels" filter to separate your own accounts from everyone else's, and it tracks the real ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Perplexity interfaces rather than only APIs. That matters here because a citation shift like Aug 14 shows up in the interface data first.

A sensible plan for the rest of 2026

I would not abandon Reddit entirely. It is cheap, it still gets cited by AI Overviews and Perplexity, and threads stay useful for years. But I would stop treating it as the central AI visibility channel.

Here is what I would do:

  1. Audit where your brand is currently cited, per engine. Don't assume.
  2. For ChatGPT, move effort to your own pages. Product pages, comparison pages and guides carry most of the weight.
  3. Add YouTube and LinkedIn to your plan before adding more Reddit.
  4. On Reddit, aim for a few high-quality answers in threads with 5 to 20 replies rather than chasing viral posts.
  5. Recheck monthly. Between July and October 2026, ChatGPT's Reddit share went from about 3.8% to under 1%. A plan built on last quarter's data can be wrong by the time you execute it.

The cause of ChatGPT's Reddit drop is still unexplained, and it could partly reverse. Until it does, the evidence says the engines no longer behave alike, and one Reddit strategy won't work across all three.
