Key takeaways
- Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell sharply in 2026. Promptwatch Data shows a steady 3.83% from Jul 18 to Aug 7, then 0.52% for Aug 14 to 17, and 0.09% by early October.
- Google is different. AI Overviews still draw 12.2% of their citations from social platforms (Sep 28 to Oct 4), though Reddit's share there slipped to 2.15% and Facebook passed it.
- Third-party "Reddit is #1" studies (46.7% of Perplexity, 27% of ChatGPT) use different methods and mostly describe earlier months. Treat them as snapshots, not current truth.
- Translated Reddit pages (
?tl=URLs) were a sign of the shift: ChatGPT's share of them dropped from 6.14% in April to 0.66% in May, per Peec AI. - If you were planning to get into ChatGPT through Reddit threads, spend that effort on your own site and the content types ChatGPT actually cites.
Why a month-by-month view is worth doing
Every few weeks someone publishes a study declaring Reddit the most important source in AI search. A few weeks later someone else shows it falling off a cliff. Both can be right, because AI citation behavior changes quickly, and one study usually covers one engine, one prompt set and one window.
One Reddit thread in r/DigitalMarketing put it plainly: 40 to 60 percent of AI search citations change month to month for the same query. That is a rough figure from a forum post, so take it as a gut check. But it matches what anyone tracking this sees. A single number for "Reddit's share of AI citations" without a date attached is nearly useless.
So this guide walks through 2026 in order, using first-party numbers from Promptwatch Data wherever they exist and flagging where I am leaning on third-party studies instead.
A quick note on conflicting numbers
Before the timeline, the thing that confuses most readers. You will see these claims side by side:
- Reddit accounts for 46.7% of Perplexity citations and 27% of ChatGPT search results (AuthorityTech, citing other studies).
- Reddit was the most-cited domain across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode in May 2026 (Semrush data reported by The Verge).
- Reddit was about 3.8% of ChatGPT citations in July and 0.86% of Perplexity citations in late September (Promptwatch Data).
These are not reconcilable by arithmetic. They differ in prompt sets, sampling, how a "citation" is counted, and above all in time. The Promptwatch figures are lower than the third-party ones even before the August drop, which tells you methodology matters. My advice: pick one source you trust, compare it against itself over time, and treat cross-study comparisons with suspicion.
January 2026: the peak-era snapshot
In January, Reddit still looked like a major source. Search Engine Land's analysis of AI citation data found Reddit citations grew 73%, but not evenly. On Perplexity, 24% of all January citations came from Reddit. Apparel prompts showed a 10% Reddit share, transportation and logistics 2%, and on Google Gemini the figure was 0.1%. Reddit made up 44% of social media citations in Google AI Overviews that month.
The interesting part is the variance by category and engine. "Reddit dominates AI" was never one claim. It was many claims.
Promptwatch's own January report, Reddit in AI search, January 2026, looked at what kind of Reddit content ChatGPT actually cited:
- About 71% of cited posts had fewer than 10 upvotes, and another 22% had 10 to 50. Posts with 500+ upvotes were about 0.6% of citations.
- About 55% of cited posts had fewer than 10 comments. Threads with 250+ comments produced 0.05% of citations.
- About 60% of cited posts were more than six months old. Posts aged two years or more were the largest bucket at roughly 22%. Only about 11% were under a month old.
That is the opposite of what most people assume. Viral threads were not what got cited. Quiet, old, self-contained answers were.
February and March 2026: still strong, but the models are changing
Through the first quarter, Reddit stayed a fixture in the top-domain lists. Promptwatch publishes monthly top-domain reports for each surface, and these are the best place to check Reddit's rank in a given month: ChatGPT citation share, March 2026, plus the AI Overview and AI Mode equivalents.
Two things happened in March that matter for context. First, ChatGPT changed how it searches: Promptwatch's citation drop report shows average citations per response fell across GPT-5.3, GPT-5.4 and GPT-5-Mini around the GPT-5.3 rollout on March 4. Fewer citations per answer means each source, Reddit included, competes for fewer slots.
Second, Peec AI's data on translated Reddit pages shows ChatGPT's share of ?tl= URLs at 3.93% in March. Keep that number in mind for the next section.
April 2026: the translated-page spike
Peec AI found that ChatGPT's share of translated Reddit citations (the ?tl= machine-translated versions of threads) rose to 6.14% in April. In Germany it reached 18.06% and in Sweden 20.51% of the relevant citations, according to their country breakdown.
This is a weird corner of the story, but it shows how Reddit won citations in non-English markets: ChatGPT was pulling machine-translated threads into answers for users in those languages. It was a lot of volume for something that turned out to be fragile.
For April's overall picture, see Promptwatch's ChatGPT citation share for April 2026 and the matching AI Overview and AI Mode reports.
May 2026: the Semrush headline and the first crack
May is where the narrative splits in two.
On one side, Semrush data compiled for The Verge showed Reddit ranked ahead of every news publisher and Wikipedia across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode. That is the headline most marketing blogs quoted for the next three months.
On the other side, Peec AI's data shows ChatGPT's translated Reddit share collapsing from 6.14% in April to 0.66% in May, with Germany dropping from 18.06% to 1.54% and Sweden from 20.51% to 1.62%. Peec's read was that something changed on OpenAI's side around late April or early May. A drop that size, consistent across countries, is not noise.
The same month, Google's surfaces went the other way on translations. From March to June, AI Overviews served ?tl= URLs in roughly 8 to 11% of their Reddit citations, and AI Mode in 10 to 14%. So Google kept leaning on Reddit's machine-translated pages while ChatGPT walked away from them.
Monthly domain rankings are in ChatGPT citation share, May 2026, AI Overview, May and AI Mode, May.
June 2026: translated citations near zero
Peec's early-June sample (June 1 to 10) put ChatGPT's translated Reddit share at 0.30%. Google's surfaces were still serving translated pages. If you were reading only one engine's data, you would have reached opposite conclusions about Reddit's health.
Promptwatch's June reports are ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overview. They include the May versus June comparison, which is the quickest way to see whether Reddit moved up or down in a given engine.
July 2026: a plateau in ChatGPT, drift in Google
Promptwatch's tracking from July 7 to August 17 gives the cleanest picture of the summer. Reddit held a steady 3.83% of ChatGPT citations from July 18 to August 7. That is a stable, meaningful share, far below the 27% claimed by third-party studies, but consistent.
Google's surfaces were drifting down:
- AI Overviews went from about 2.5% in early July to about 2.1% in August (first-7-day average 2.37%, last-7-day 2.10%, an 11.3% relative decline).
- AI Mode went from a 2.22% first-7-day average to 1.54% in the last seven days, a 30.5% relative decline. The clearest step came at the end of July, from 2.06% (July 22 to 28) to 1.78% the next week.
So even before ChatGPT's big move, Google AI Mode was already trimming Reddit.
August 2026: the collapse
This is the turning point. The numbers from Promptwatch's Reddit report:
| Period | Reddit's ChatGPT citation share |
|---|---|
| Jul 18 to Aug 7, 2026 | 3.83% (steady) |
| Aug 8, 2026 | Slips to the mid 2s |
| Aug 14 to 17, 2026 | 0.52% average, an 86.4% relative drop |
August 8 is the day ChatGPT changed its query fanout, which Promptwatch covered separately: ChatGPT began using the site: operator at scale, jumping from about 0.4% to about 17% of fanout queries overnight, with searches per response nearly doubling. A shift in how ChatGPT builds its searches plausibly changes which pages get pulled in. Reddit then fell below 1% on August 14.
Two caveats from Promptwatch itself. Only responses with at least one citation count toward these shares. And the size of the drop is provisional, since a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out. If you track this yourself, check collection volume around August 14 and compare which Reddit URLs were cited before and after.
SUSO's write-up of the same event frames it against the earlier decline reported by Profound, where Reddit's ChatGPT share fell from about 12% to about 1% between August 2024 and June 2025. That history shows Reddit's ChatGPT share has swung hard more than once.
September and October 2026: the new baseline
Promptwatch's social media citations report for September 28 to October 4 describes the aftermath:
| Engine | Social platforms' share of citations | Top social platform | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 0.46% (down from 5.8%) | 0.09% (down from 5.19%) | LinkedIn, 0.3% |
| Google AI Overviews | 12.2% | 2.15% | YouTube, 4.28% |
| Perplexity | 2.7% | 0.86% (tied with LinkedIn) | LinkedIn and Reddit, 0.86% |
Averaged across the three engines: YouTube 1.70%, Reddit 1.03%, LinkedIn 0.90%, Facebook 0.81%, Instagram 0.56%, TikTok 0.07%, X 0.04%.
A few details I find striking. Google AI Overviews gives social platforms about 26 times the share ChatGPT does. Facebook more than doubled there to 2.38%, passing Reddit. TikTok only shows up in AI Overviews, at 0.22%. And Perplexity's YouTube share fell from 2.67% to 0.79%, so no platform is safe from these swings.

What this means for your strategy
Stop treating Reddit as a ChatGPT channel
With Reddit at 0.09% of ChatGPT citations, seeding threads to get into ChatGPT answers is poor value right now. Promptwatch's own recommendation is to put that effort into your own site and the listicles, guides and comparisons ChatGPT does cite. Its content-type data points the same way: product pages are the most cited type at 22.4%, followed by landing pages and listicles.
Pick channels per engine
The engines no longer behave alike. Promptwatch's advice: for Google, invest in YouTube first, then Facebook and Instagram. For Perplexity, publish on LinkedIn as well as Reddit. For ChatGPT, own your site.
If you do use Reddit, play the long game
The January data suggests what worked: one self-contained answer in a thread, not a chase for popular posts. Treat Reddit as a compounding asset, correct outdated claims in old threads, and don't buy or bait engagement. AuthorityTech notes Reddit now blocks about 23 million spam views per day, so astroturfing is a losing bet anyway.
Measure monthly, and per engine
Because 40 to 60 percent of citations can change monthly, a one-time audit is stale almost immediately. You want a tracker that records citations by engine over time and ideally shows which specific URLs get cited.
Tools for tracking Reddit citations over time
For tracking this properly, Promptwatch monitors the real interfaces of ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Perplexity, and has dedicated Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports plus a "My channels" filter for your own accounts. It also ties citations to crawler logs and AI traffic, which helps when you want to know whether a drop in Reddit citations changed anything for your own pages.

Other options in the same space, with different depth:
Peec AI is a prompt tracker with multi-language coverage, and its translated-Reddit research is the source of the ?tl= findings above.
Profound is a monitoring platform whose earlier research documented Reddit's 2024 to 2025 ChatGPT decline.
ZipTie does deeper analysis of AI search visibility.
Semrush supplied the May 2026 data behind The Verge's Reddit ranking.

Mentionova pitches six-engine tracking with Reddit workflows, if Reddit participation is part of your plan.
| Tool | Good for | Limitation to know |
|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation tracking plus crawler logs, traffic and content actions | Larger platform than a simple tracker |
| Peec AI | Multi-language prompt tracking | Tracking focus, no content execution |
| Profound | Enterprise monitoring | Higher price point |
| ZipTie | Deep analysis of citations | Narrower feature set |
| Semrush | Adding AI tracking to an existing SEO suite | Fixed prompt sets |

How to read the next Reddit headline
When the next study claims Reddit is winning or losing AI search, ask four questions:
- Which engine? ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Perplexity moved in different directions in 2026.
- Which dates? A May number says little about October.
- How are citations counted? Only responses with citations, all responses, or unique domains?
- Does it come from real user interfaces or APIs? Answers and citations can differ between the two.
The short version of 2026: Reddit's ChatGPT share went from a steady few percent to close to zero within a summer, Google's surfaces trimmed it more gently, and Perplexity still gives it a small but real slice. The brands that did well were the ones watching monthly, not quoting last quarter's headline.
