Key takeaways
- Reddit held a steady 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 to August 7, 2026, then fell below 1% on August 14. The August 14-17 average was 0.52%, an 86.4% relative drop, per Promptwatch's Reddit citation data.
- It didn't bounce back. For September 28 to October 4, Reddit was at 0.09% of ChatGPT citations, according to Promptwatch's social media citations report.
- Google AI Overviews and Perplexity still cite Reddit (2.15% and 0.86% in that same week), so the answer depends on which engine you care about.
- Nobody has verified why ChatGPT stopped citing Reddit. Treat every explanation as a theory until a primary source confirms it.
- Reddit can still be a brand and community channel. It stopped being a reliable ChatGPT citation tactic.
What actually happened
Through mid-July and early August, Reddit was one of the steadier domains in ChatGPT Search citations. Then two things happened close together.
On August 8, ChatGPT changed its query fan-out behavior. Promptwatch Data recorded the site: operator jumping from about 0.4% to about 17% of fan-out queries overnight, and searches per response nearly doubled. Reddit's share slid from the high 3s to the mid 2s that same day.
Then on August 14 the cliff hit. Reddit dropped below 1% and stayed there.

Here is the timeline in one place, using Promptwatch Data figures:
| Period | Reddit share of ChatGPT citations | Source window |
|---|---|---|
| Jul 18 to Aug 7, 2026 | 3.83% average | Daily data |
| Aug 14 to 17, 2026 | 0.52% average (-86.4%) | Daily data |
| Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026 | 0.09% | Weekly snapshot, down from 5.19% in the earlier report |
Two months on, this is not a blip. Some third-party posts mention a slight rebound after August 20, and one cites a mid-June dip that recovered over two months. I couldn't reconcile those with the Promptwatch October numbers, so I wouldn't plan around a comeback.
Why it happened: what we know and what we don't
This is the part where most hot takes get ahead of the evidence.
Promptwatch itself says the data shows when the change happened, not why. A source-selection change inside ChatGPT is the obvious candidate. A data-collection issue was something it said could not be ruled out at the time, though the October report showing Reddit even lower makes a pure measurement glitch less likely.
Other explanations are circulating:
- That Reddit deliberately blocked crawlers via robots.txt (an explainx update dated August 20).
- That ChatGPT re-weighted its whole source mix when a newer flagship model rolled out.
- That Reddit tightened logged-out access, including a login requirement on old.reddit.com.
I haven't seen any of these confirmed by a primary source such as Reddit or OpenAI. They might all be true, partly true, or unrelated. If you're briefing a client or your CMO, say "cause unconfirmed" and move on. It beats a confident story you'll have to retract.
If you want to check the crawler theory for your own site, the sensible move is to look at which AI bots actually hit your pages. Tools like Promptwatch log IP-verified AI crawler activity, which separates "we weren't cited" from "we weren't even read."

Cited less is not the same as ignored
A popular argument on Reddit itself, and in a Business Insider piece, is that ChatGPT still consults Reddit when building answers and just stops listing it as a source. A Reddit spokesperson told Business Insider that the platform's value is its "130 million real people having authentic conversations."
It's a reasonable hypothesis. It's also not something you can measure from citation data. Citations show what ChatGPT displays, not everything it read or what shaped the wording. Reddit content has also been part of model training data for years, so some of its influence is baked in regardless of live links.
But be honest about what follows from that. If you can't see the influence, you can't attribute it, report it, or optimize toward it. Planning a budget around invisible effects is how teams end up defending spend they can't explain.
Engine by engine: where Reddit still shows up
The drop was brutal on ChatGPT and mild elsewhere. Using Promptwatch Data:
| Engine | Reddit trend | Latest figure |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Search | Collapsed Aug 14, stayed down | 0.09% (Sep 28 to Oct 4) |
| Google AI Overviews | Gradual decline, about 11.3% relative (July to August) | 2.15% (Sep 28 to Oct 4) |
| Google AI Mode | Step down late July, about 30.5% relative decline | Not in the October report |
| Perplexity | Not covered in the August report | 0.86%, tied with LinkedIn |
The October report adds a bigger picture. Across all seven tracked social platforms, ChatGPT now draws only 0.46% of its citations from social, down from 5.8% in the earlier report. Google AI Overviews draws 12.2% from social, about 26 times as much. In AI Overviews, YouTube leads at 4.28%, and Facebook (2.38%) has passed Reddit. LinkedIn is the most-cited social platform in ChatGPT, at a modest 0.3%.
So "is Reddit dead for GEO" is the wrong question. Reddit is nearly gone from ChatGPT citations, still modest but present in Google's AI surfaces, and a minor player in Perplexity. For deeper numbers on social platforms, see the Promptwatch Data hub.
A decision framework: should you keep investing in Reddit?
I'd split this by goal, not by a blanket yes or no.
If your goal is getting cited in ChatGPT
Stop counting on Reddit threads. Promptwatch's own recommendation from the October data is to put that effort into your own site and the formats ChatGPT cites. Product pages are the most-cited content type at 22.4% of citations, followed by landing pages and listicles (content type report). Landing pages and docs also stay cited longest, while news loses half its pages within 36 days (half-life report).
That's good news in one way. Those are assets you control.
If your goal is Google AI Overviews or AI Mode
Reddit still earns roughly 2% there, so it isn't worthless, but YouTube is the bigger lever at 4.28%, and public Facebook and Instagram profiles matter more than most teams assume. Complete those before adding a new Reddit program.
If your goal is Perplexity
Publish on LinkedIn as well as Reddit. They tie at 0.86%.
If your goal is community, reputation or customer research
Reddit might still be the right place, and for reasons that have nothing to do with citations. Real discussions surface objections, comparison language and questions your site doesn't answer. Just don't sell it internally as a ChatGPT visibility play. And skip anything that looks like spam, because heavy-handed seeding tends to get accounts banned and communities moderated harder.
Quick decision table
| Situation | Reddit priority | Better first move |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT is your main AI channel | Low | Product pages, landing pages, listicles, comparisons on your site |
| You depend on Google AI Overviews | Medium | YouTube, then Facebook and Instagram, then Reddit |
| Perplexity matters to your buyers | Medium | LinkedIn plus Reddit |
| You sell to a community-driven niche | Medium to high | Genuine participation for research and reputation |
| Reddit was your only AI tactic | Fix this now | Diversify across engines and owned content |
The bigger lesson: don't build on one tactic
The line from the Promptwatch-cited coverage that stuck with me: "post on Reddit and get cited by ChatGPT" was never a durable AI search strategy. Eight weeks ago it was working. Then an unexplained change erased most of the effect in under a week. Whatever the cause, the exposure is the same: you were renting visibility from a third party's platform and a third party's retrieval logic.
A few habits make that risk smaller:
- Track citations weekly with rolling trends, not single-day comparisons. Promptwatch suggested exactly this after the drop.
- When a domain drops, check which domains gained share. Visibility moves rather than vanishes.
- Compare Reddit URLs cited before and after a change to see whether specific subreddits or topics were hit.
- Track each AI engine separately. An average hides what happened.
- Keep citation share and actual traffic in separate columns. Being cited and being clicked are different outcomes.
Tools for tracking this yourself
You don't need a big stack to watch for the next shift. You need prompt tracking by engine, source-level citation data, and ideally crawler logs.
Promptwatch covers the widest ground here: it tracks real UIs for ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and others, breaks citations out by Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn, and pairs that with crawler logs and an Action Board of suggested fixes. It's the one I'd start with if Reddit was part of your plan.

Other options, depending on budget and need:
| Tool | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Profound | Enterprise citation monitoring | Monitoring-focused, higher price tier |
| Peec AI | Multi-language prompt tracking | Lighter on crawler and traffic data |
| Otterly.AI | Affordable basic monitoring | Prompt tracker, limited depth |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Teams already in Ahrefs | Add-on to an SEO suite |
| Mentionova | Reddit-centered workflows | Six-engine tracking with Reddit workflows |

If you want to browse more options, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com lists dozens of trackers by category.
What I'd do this quarter
- Pull your citation data by engine for July through now. Find out whether Reddit was ever a meaningful share of your own visibility, because a site-wide average may not match your niche.
- Move content effort toward formats ChatGPT demonstrably cites: product pages, landing pages, comparisons, and listicles on your own domain.
- Add YouTube and complete your Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn profiles if you rely on Google AI surfaces or Perplexity.
- Keep Reddit as a participation and research channel, with honest accounts and real answers. Drop it from your ChatGPT reporting line.
- Re-check every few weeks. If the cause turns out to be a policy or crawler change, it could reverse. If it's a retrieval re-weighting, it likely won't.
Bottom line
Is Reddit still worth it for GEO? For ChatGPT citations, the data says no: 0.09% in early October is too small to build around. For Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, it's a modest supporting channel, not a pillar. As a place to understand your market and talk to people, it hasn't changed at all. Treat it that way, and put your citation-focused effort into pages you own.
