Key takeaways
- Ahrefs is still the pick for backlink-led, search-first SEO. Semrush is the pick if you want SEO, content, PPC and AI tracking in one place.
- The AI add-ons are priced differently. Semrush charges per domain plus prompt packs ($99/mo base). Ahrefs charges by checks, and its full Brand Radar index starts at $199/mo.
- Third-party articles disagree on AI pricing. Use the official pricing pages and verify before you buy.
- Neither tool was built for AI search first, and I found no independent accuracy test comparing their AI data.
- If AI visibility is the main job, a dedicated platform is worth a look next to either suite.
The short version
I'll skip the suspense. If you already live in backlink reports and want AI mention data without changing workflows, Ahrefs plus Brand Radar is the cleaner fit. If you run SEO, content, PPC and reporting for several clients and want one login, Semrush One makes more sense.
The interesting part is that the old debate (keywords, backlinks, audits) has barely moved, while the AI visibility layer is where the two have drifted apart. That layer is what this guide focuses on.

The classic SEO comparison, quickly
Both platforms are good enough that most teams could pick either and ship results. The differences are about emphasis.
| Area | Semrush | Ahrefs |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Broad marketing suite (SEO, PPC, content, social) | Deeper on SEO signals |
| Backlinks | Solid, secondary strength | Generally seen as the stronger index and link-building workflow |
| Keyword data | More US-specific keywords (3.8B vs 2.5B per OneLittleWeb) | Wider international coverage (217+ locations vs 142) |
| Technical audits | More depth, including log file analysis | Cleaner reporting, faster processing |
| Entry price | Free tier, paid plans from about $139/mo | Free Webmaster Tools, Starter from $29/mo |
| AI visibility | AI Visibility Toolkit, bundled in Semrush One | Brand Radar plus included prompt checks |
One Reddit thread asking which to choose for SEO plus AEO had the usual split: Ahrefs reads as pure SEO, Semrush as an all-in-one platform. That matches my experience. Neither description is wrong, and neither tells you which AI add-on is better.

How Ahrefs handles AI visibility
Ahrefs splits AI visibility into two pieces, and people mix them up constantly.
What is included in your plan
Paid Ahrefs plans include a small allowance of custom AI prompts. Each prompt uses one check per platform, location and update, so the numbers are tight.
| Plan | Price (monthly billing) | AI prompts included (1 platform, daily) |
|---|---|---|
| Lite | $129/mo | 5 |
| Standard | $249/mo | 10 |
| Advanced | $449/mo | 20 |
| Enterprise | $1,499/mo | from 83 |
So the claim that Brand Radar is "included on paid plans from $129" is only partly true. You get a handful of prompts, not the full index.
The Brand Radar add-on
The full AI Visibility Index starts from $199/mo per Ahrefs' own page. Its selling point is a huge modeled prompt database, so you see market-wide data without writing prompts yourself. The Brand Radar page lists roughly 280M prompts for AI Overviews, 103M for AI Mode, and 28M-ish each for Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and ChatGPT. One third-party review claims $699/mo for a six-platform bundle, priced per domain. I could not confirm that on Ahrefs' page, so check it yourself.
There are also custom prompt packages if you only want to track your own prompts:
- Basic: $50/mo for 2,500 checks
- Growth: $100/mo for 7,000 checks
- Scale: $250/mo for 25,000 checks
Extras include prompt suggestions, fanout query discovery, mention and citation tracking, competitor benchmarking, AI Sources reports for YouTube, TikTok and Reddit (free in beta), and Bot Analytics (free in beta).
The catch: checks add up
Checks are prompt x platform x location x frequency. Five prompts on one platform daily is already 150 checks a month. Claude costs 8 checks per update. Track several platforms in several countries and you burn through an allowance quickly. Model it before you commit.
How Semrush handles AI visibility
Semrush went the more conventional route: a standalone toolkit, then a bundle.
The AI Visibility Toolkit
The standalone toolkit is $99/mo per domain with no free trial. That covers one project, 25 tracked prompts, 1,000 daily queries in Prompt Research and 300 in AI Analysis reports. An extra domain is $99/mo and 50 more prompts cost $60/mo. A competitor (Otterly, so take it with salt) estimates reaching about 100 prompts costs around $219/mo and that extra users each need a $99 license.
What you get is brand performance benchmarking, sentiment against competitors, prompt research, daily prompt tracking, an AI crawler technical audit, competitive gap analysis and presentation-ready reports. There is also a free AI Visibility Checker and a Semrush MCP for connecting data to AI assistants.
Semrush One
Semrush One bundles the SEO and AI toolkits:
| Plan | Websites | Prompts | Daily-tracked keywords |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 5 | 50 | 500 |
| Pro+ | 15 | 100 | 1,500 |
| Advanced | 40 | 200 | 5,000 |
Starter is about $199/mo according to a Reddit thread, and Semrush's pricing page lists $139, $199 and $299 monthly tiers. The page text does not make the tier mapping obvious, so confirm on the live page.
Head-to-head on AI visibility
| Question | Semrush | Ahrefs |
|---|---|---|
| Entry cost for AI tracking | $99/mo per domain | Included prompts on paid plans; full index from $199/mo |
| Pricing model | Per domain plus prompt packs | Per check (prompt x platform x location x frequency) |
| Main strength | Daily prompt tracking, sentiment, AI crawler audit | Large modeled prompt database, no setup needed |
| Fanout discovery | Not a headline feature | Yes |
| Agency friendliness | Pay per client domain | Pay per domain on the index, checks on custom prompts |
| Bundling | Inside Semrush One | Alongside Ahrefs plans |
My read: Ahrefs is better if you want to explore the market (what is AI saying about my category, which prompts exist). Semrush is better if you want to monitor a defined list of prompts and get sentiment and technical recommendations. Different jobs.
Why the fanout feature matters less than it sounds
Ahrefs advertises fanout query discovery. Fair enough, but it helps to know what fanouts look like now. Promptwatch Data measured ChatGPT averaging about 2.15 fanouts per response in early December 2025, about 1.84 by early March 2026, and 1.0 when data resumed in April, with average query length falling from roughly 117 characters to about 53. Fanouts are shorter and more keyword-like than the marketing implies. That is partly good news for classic SEO tools, since keyword-style queries are their home turf. (That page also says a single prompt can trigger 3 to 8+ searches, which conflicts with the measured averages, so I'd trust the averages.)
There is a second reason rank metrics fall short. According to Promptwatch's average sources per response data, ChatGPT cites about 5 sources per web-search answer, while Google AI Overviews and Perplexity cite around 10. An answer has far fewer slots than a ten-link SERP, so a good ranking does not tell you whether you win a slot.
The technical side: AI crawlers
Both tools touch on crawler access. Semrush's toolkit audits technical blockers for AI crawlers, and Ahrefs offers Bot Analytics (free in beta). The crawler mix is shifting, so this matters. Promptwatch's AI crawler traffic data shows OpenAI at 79.8% of IP-verified AI crawler requests in Aug 31 to Sep 6, 2026, down from 94.8% in Jun 8 to 14. Check robots.txt, CDN and WAF rules for every major crawler, not just GPTBot.
What nobody has proven yet
I looked for independent accuracy tests of either tool's AI visibility numbers and found none. Both rely on sampled or modeled prompt data, and AI answers vary by country, model version and day. Treat any number from either tool as directional. Run a pilot on your own brand and cross-check a few prompts by hand in ChatGPT and AI Overviews.
Also be wary of comparison articles. Several are affiliate-driven, and one (from AthenaHQ) quotes Semrush AI pricing from $199 and Ahrefs from $129, which does not match Semrush's own $99 per-domain page. Official pricing pages win.
Which one should you pick?
Pick Ahrefs if
- Backlinks and link building are your main lever.
- You want market-wide AI prompt data without building a prompt list.
- You already pay for Ahrefs and just want a small allowance of tracked prompts.
Pick Semrush if
- You need one platform for SEO, PPC, content and reporting.
- You want daily prompt tracking, sentiment, and an AI crawler audit.
- You are an SMB, agency or mid-market team comfortable paying per domain.
Pick neither as your AI tool if
- AI visibility is the whole job, not a feature. Both suites treat it as one module among many. A dedicated platform covers more engines, citations and workflow depth.
Dedicated alternatives worth testing
If you land in that last bucket, Promptwatch is the one I would test first, because it goes past monitoring into content gap analysis, an agent that writes and publishes, and IP-verified AI crawler logs. It sits alongside your SEO suite rather than replacing it.

Other options in the catalog include Profound for enterprise monitoring, Peec AI and Otterly.AI as lighter prompt trackers, AthenaHQ, and SE Ranking if you want an SEO suite with a built-in AI toolkit.

| Option | Type | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Semrush One | SEO suite plus AI toolkit | Teams wanting everything in one login |
| Ahrefs plus Brand Radar | SEO suite plus AI add-on | Link-led SEO with market-wide AI data |
| Promptwatch | AI visibility and GEO platform | Tracking, fixing and measuring AI visibility |
| Profound | AI visibility monitoring | Enterprise monitoring |
| Peec AI / Otterly.AI | Prompt trackers | Budget-friendly monitoring |
| SE Ranking | SEO suite with AI toolkit | Mid-priced all-in-one |
For more options, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com lists many more.
A practical way to decide
- List your top 25 prompts and the countries you care about.
- Price both options using official pages: checks for Ahrefs, domains plus prompt packs for Semrush.
- Run a 30-day pilot on one brand.
- Compare results against manual spot checks in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.
- Check whether the data tells you what to do next, not just where you stand.
Pricing changes often, so confirm every figure on ahrefs.com/pricing, semrush.com/pricing and the Brand Radar page before buying. The numbers here came from official pages at the time of writing, and several of them had small inconsistencies even within a single vendor's site.
