Key takeaways
- Social platforms are a small slice of AI citations overall, and the slice varies hugely by engine: 0.46% of ChatGPT citations, 2.7% of Perplexity, 12.2% of Google AI Overviews (Promptwatch Data, Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026).
- LinkedIn is the most consistent social source across engines. Instagram matters mainly in Google AI Overviews, at 1.61% of citations.
- Which LinkedIn page types get cited depends on the engine. Pulse articles lead on Google, posts lead on Perplexity, company pages lead on ChatGPT.
- Likes and follower counts do not predict citations. Clear, self-contained answers do.
- Tracking this means monitoring prompts across engines and looking at the cited URLs, not just whether your brand was mentioned.
Why social citations deserve their own tracking
Most AI visibility reporting stops at "was my brand mentioned?" That hides something useful. When an AI answer cites a LinkedIn post or an Instagram profile, it is telling you which of your owned (or semi-owned) social assets it trusts as evidence. That is actionable in a way a mention count is not.
The catch is that social citations are rare in absolute terms and wildly uneven between engines. If you treat "AI search" as one thing, you will optimize for the wrong platform. So the first job is to understand the per-engine picture.
What the 2026 data says about social platforms
Promptwatch Data measured social platform share of citations from Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026. Averaged across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, the shares were:
| Platform | Average share of citations (3 engines) |
|---|---|
| YouTube | 1.70% |
| 1.03% | |
| 0.90% | |
| 0.81% | |
| 0.56% | |
| TikTok | 0.07% |
| X | 0.04% |
Those averages look tiny, and they are. But the per-engine split is where it gets interesting:
| Engine | Social share of citations | Notable detail |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 0.46% | LinkedIn is the top social platform at 0.3%; Reddit fell from 5.19% to 0.09% |
| Perplexity | 2.7% | LinkedIn and Reddit tie at 0.86% |
| Google AI Overviews | 12.2% | YouTube 4.28%, Facebook 2.38%, Reddit 2.15%, Instagram 1.61%, LinkedIn 1.55% |
Google AI Overviews cites social platforms about 26 times as much as ChatGPT does. If your buyers live in Google, Instagram and Facebook profiles are worth keeping complete and current. If they live in ChatGPT, social is close to irrelevant, with LinkedIn the one exception worth a look. The Reddit collapse is covered in more detail in Promptwatch's report on Reddit citations dropping in ChatGPT.
One honest limitation: there is no engine-by-engine Instagram breakdown beyond the AI Overviews figure. Instagram averages 0.56% across the three engines, and almost all of that comes from Google. Anyone claiming precise Instagram citation numbers for ChatGPT or Perplexity is guessing.
Instagram in AI answers: what to actually do
Instagram is the weaker story, so I will keep this short and practical.
- It shows up mainly in AI Overviews, so treat it as a Google-surface asset.
- Complete profiles matter. Bio, category, links, location and a consistent brand name give an AI system something to quote.
- Captions are text AI can read. A post that states a clear fact (opening hours, a product detail, a price range) is more quotable than a mood caption.
- Do not expect Instagram to move ChatGPT answers.
Promptwatch also has dedicated reporting on the Instagram accounts, reels and posts that AI cites, including likes, comments, plays and follower counts, plus a "My channels" filter so you can separate your own accounts from everyone else's.
LinkedIn in AI answers: the page-type picture
LinkedIn is where the useful detail is. Not all LinkedIn URLs are equal, and the cited page type differs by engine. Promptwatch's August 2026 LinkedIn page-type report (window Aug 1 to 31) found:
| Engine | Pulse articles | Posts | Company pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| All engines combined | 30.41% | 27.75% | 18.05% |
| ChatGPT | 3.65% | 26.45% | 33.68% |
| Google AI Mode | 34.66% | 24.39% | 13.53% |
| Google AI Overviews | 34.51% | 23.06% | 14.46% |
| Perplexity | 26.01% | 37.32% | 22.03% |
Two things stand out. First, ChatGPT cites company pages more than anything else on LinkedIn, and Pulse articles barely register there. Second, company pages gained share on every engine compared with the May to June window (13.35% to 18.05% overall). Job listings (6.51%) and help articles (5.97%) also show up in ChatGPT, which surprised me. Showcase pages, product pages and LinkedIn Learning are each under half a percent.
AI Overviews has the highest share of "top content" pages (5.15%), which go to accounts LinkedIn ranks as leading voices on a topic. An earlier window is covered in the May to June LinkedIn report.
Why third-party studies seem to disagree
You will see other numbers. OtterlyAI's study of 1.31 million LinkedIn citations says Pulse articles take 72.2% of content citations. That does not contradict the 30% figure above. OtterlyAI looks only at content URLs, while Promptwatch counts company pages, jobs and other types in the denominator too. Different denominators, different headline numbers. Always check what the percentage is a percentage of.

The OtterlyAI study also reports that likes, comments, emojis and hashtags correlate near zero with citations, and that Perplexity (43.3%) and Google AI Overviews (22.2%) account for most LinkedIn citations in its sample. Useful context, with the caveat that it comes from one vendor's sample.
The "75% from personal profiles" claim
A Meltwater and LinkedIn report, amplified in a sponsored article, says 75% of LinkedIn citations come from individual profiles and 25% from company pages. Be careful with it. It is sponsored research, and it sits awkwardly next to Promptwatch's August data, where company pages are 18% of LinkedIn citations overall and 33.68% in ChatGPT. Both can be true under different category mixes, but I would not build a whole strategy on the 75% number. Post from leaders and from the company page.
What makes a social post quotable
Across the sources, the pattern is consistent. Engagement does not drive citation. Clarity does. DSMN8's guide makes the same point about employee posts: follower count and reaction volume are not what AI engines select on.

In practice:
- State one clear claim, then back it with a number or example. A post that works as a standalone answer is more likely to be quoted than a teaser.
- Write original posts. A Semrush analysis cited by DSMN8 found around 95% of AI-cited LinkedIn content is original, with reshares at about 5%.
- Match format to engine. Pulse articles for Google and Perplexity, a complete company page for ChatGPT.
- Keep the company page complete and current, and post from it regularly.
- Name things consistently, so a model can tie the post to your brand.
Promptwatch's own advice from the LinkedIn report is the same: post regularly from both the company page and leaders' profiles, and write posts that stand alone as answers.
How to track the social posts AI actually quotes
Here is a workable process, whatever tool you use.
Step 1: build prompts around real buying questions
Use the questions your buyers ask, split by persona and by market. Social citations vary by prompt type, so a branded prompt and a "best X for Y" prompt will cite different sources.
Step 2: collect responses from the real interfaces
API outputs can differ from what users see in ChatGPT, AI Overviews or Perplexity. A Reddit thread on r/SEO puts it bluntly: tools that cannot see real interface answers are doing directional simulation rather than hard measurement. Ask any vendor how it collects data.
Step 3: look at cited URLs, not just mentions
Filter citations by domain (linkedin.com, instagram.com), then by page type: Pulse, post, company page, profile. Compare your share against competitors.
Step 4: track the engine mix over time
The numbers move fast. ChatGPT's Reddit share dropped from about 4% to 0.5% in a single day in August 2026. Social mix can shift overnight, so look at trends rather than a single snapshot.
Step 5: connect it to action
If your LinkedIn company page is cited in ChatGPT but nothing else is, the fix is page completeness. If Pulse articles are cited on Perplexity but you publish none, that is a content gap.
Tools for tracking social citations
Most AI visibility tools show mentions and cited domains. Fewer break citations down to social platforms and page types.
Promptwatch tracks Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and Instagram citations in dedicated reports, shows when your own posts get cited for your prompts, and ties that to crawler logs and AI traffic. It also has content gap analysis and a Content Agent for the pages that need writing. Pricing starts at $95/mo, and you can confirm current plans at promptwatch.com/pricing. There is also a free AI visibility report if you want a quick baseline.

A few other options worth a look, depending on budget and needs:

| Tool | Strength | Social-citation depth |
|---|---|---|
| Promptwatch | Tracking plus content creation and crawler logs | Dedicated Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram reports |
| Otterly.AI | Affordable monitoring | Published LinkedIn research; basic tracking |
| Profound | Enterprise monitoring | Monitoring-focused |
| Peec AI | Multi-language tracking | Prompt-level tracking |
| Semrush | Existing SEO suite | AI tracking added on; fixed prompt sets |
I have not verified pricing or feature depth for every tool in that table beyond what each vendor publishes, so check before buying. For a wider list, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com is a good place to compare options.
A simple 30-day plan
- Week 1: Set up prompts and a baseline. Record your share of social citations per engine.
- Week 2: Complete the LinkedIn company page and Instagram profile. Fix naming inconsistencies.
- Week 3: Publish two or three Pulse articles and several standalone posts, each answering one specific question.
- Week 4: Compare citations by page type and engine. Keep what got cited, drop what did not.
If you would rather have a team run this, 1001 SEO Media handles GEO and AI search work for brands, but the process above is doable in-house.
What to remember
Social citations are a small, uneven slice of AI search, and where you invest depends on the engine your buyers use. Google AI Overviews rewards YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Perplexity rewards LinkedIn posts and Reddit. ChatGPT barely cites social at all, apart from LinkedIn company pages. Write posts that work as complete answers, track cited URLs by page type, and re-check monthly because the mix keeps moving.
