Key takeaways
- From Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026, social platforms made up 12.2% of Google AI Overviews citations and 0.46% of ChatGPT citations. That is roughly a 26x gap, which is where the "25x" headline comes from.
- Perplexity sits in the middle at 2.7%, with LinkedIn and Reddit tied at 0.86%.
- ChatGPT's social share collapsed from 5.8% in an earlier report. Reddit alone went from 5.19% to 0.09%. Any advice that treats Reddit as a top ChatGPT source is out of date.
- YouTube is the strongest social platform for AI search overall, leading AI Overviews at 4.28%.
- Each engine needs its own plan: YouTube and Facebook for Google, LinkedIn for ChatGPT and Perplexity, and your own site for ChatGPT above all.
What the data says
The numbers below come from Promptwatch Data's October 2026 social media citations report, covering Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026. It tracks seven platforms (Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X) across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, using responses collected from the real user interfaces of each engine, not API outputs.
| Engine | Social share of all citations | Top social platform | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | 12.2% | YouTube (4.28%) | Facebook 2.38%, Reddit 2.15%, Instagram 1.61%, LinkedIn 1.55%, TikTok 0.22% |
| Perplexity | 2.7% | LinkedIn and Reddit (0.86% each) | YouTube 0.79%, down from 2.67% |
| ChatGPT | 0.46% | LinkedIn (about 0.3%) | Reddit 0.09%, down from 5.19% |
Averaged across the three engines, the ranking is YouTube at 1.70%, Reddit at 1.03%, LinkedIn at 0.90%, Facebook at 0.81%, Instagram at 0.56%, TikTok at 0.07% and X at 0.04%.
A note on the "25x" in the title. 12.2 divided by 0.46 is about 26.5, and Promptwatch itself says "about 26 times". Call it 25x or 26x, the point holds: these are two very different citation environments.

Why ChatGPT stopped citing social
The ChatGPT number is the surprising one, because for a long time the standard GEO advice was "get on Reddit." Promptwatch's Reddit citations report shows what happened:
- Reddit held a steady 3.83% of ChatGPT citations from Jul 18 to Aug 7, 2026.
- On Aug 8 it dipped into the mid-2s. That is the same day ChatGPT changed how it fans out queries, as covered in Promptwatch's site: operator report, where site: queries jumped from about 0.4% to about 17% of fanout queries.
- On Aug 14 the share fell below 1%. The Aug 14 to 17 average was 0.52%, an 86.4% relative drop.
Promptwatch is careful here, and I think that is right. A change in source selection is the obvious explanation, but a data-collection issue can't be ruled out, so it calls the size of the drop provisional. The October report, which shows Reddit at 0.09%, makes a pure collection glitch less likely. Still, I would treat the mechanism as unproven even though the outcome is clear.
Meanwhile, ChatGPT's citation mix by content type tells you where the citations went. Product pages were the most cited type at 22.4%, followed by landing pages and listicles. ChatGPT is leaning on first-party and editorial pages, not conversation threads.
Why AI Overviews leans on social
AI Overviews sits close to classic Google search, and Google already indexes and ranks YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Reddit heavily. Those surfaces show up in AI Overviews for the same reason they show up in regular results: Google trusts them and has the data.
Two details from the October report stand out:
- Facebook more than doubled to 2.38% and now passes Reddit at 2.15%. Public pages and groups matter more than most B2B teams assume.
- TikTok appears only in AI Overviews, at 0.22%. It is a small number, but it is zero everywhere else.
Reddit is not dead on Google, either. Over Jul 7 to Aug 17, Reddit eased from 2.37% to 2.10% in AI Overviews (an 11.3% relative decline) and fell from 2.22% to 1.54% in AI Mode (30.5%), with the clearest step down at the end of July. It is declining, just far more gradually than in ChatGPT.
Older third-party numbers point the same direction. Tinuiti reported in January that AI Overviews sent about 13% of citations to social media, AI Mode about 9% and Gemini about 3%. Different methodology and a different date, so don't compare them directly with the October figures, but the ordering is consistent.
Perplexity is the middle child
Perplexity cites social at 2.7%, and its mix is more balanced than the others. LinkedIn and Reddit tie at 0.86%. YouTube is at 0.79%, down sharply from 2.67% in the earlier report. X peaks at about 0.1% and barely registers on any engine.
If you sell to professionals, Perplexity is the engine where LinkedIn posts and articles have the best chance of doing real work. For more on which LinkedIn formats get picked up, see Promptwatch's LinkedIn citation page types report.
What to do on each engine
| If your buyers use... | Put effort into | Skip or deprioritize |
|---|---|---|
| Google (AI Overviews, AI Mode) | YouTube first, then complete and active public Facebook pages and Instagram profiles | Treating X as a channel for AI search |
| ChatGPT | Your own site, plus the listicles, guides and comparisons ChatGPT does cite | Seeding Reddit threads to win ChatGPT citations |
| Perplexity | LinkedIn and Reddit together | X |
These match Promptwatch's own recommendations from the October report. A few practical notes follow.
Google: start with video
YouTube is the largest single social source in AI Overviews at 4.28%. Publish videos with clear titles, accurate descriptions and transcripts that answer the specific questions your buyers ask. Then make sure your Facebook page and Instagram profile are complete: name, category, description, links, recent posts. Those are cheap to maintain and now earn a combined 4% of AI Overviews citations.
ChatGPT: invest in owned pages
With social at 0.46%, ChatGPT is mostly a website game. Citations skew toward product pages, landing pages, listicles and documentation. Almost half of ChatGPT responses cite 10 or more unique domains, per Promptwatch's unique domains report, so there is room to appear in the mix without being the single winner. Content half-life matters too: landing pages and docs stayed cited longest while news lost half its pages within 36 days, so durable pages beat one-off posts.
Perplexity: publish where professionals read
Post original LinkedIn articles and posts with real substance, and participate in relevant subreddits with useful answers rather than promotion. Given the volatility in YouTube's share on Perplexity (2.67% to 0.79%), don't make video your only bet there.
How to measure this for your own brand
Aggregate shares tell you what the engines do on average. They don't tell you whether your Reddit thread or YouTube video is the one being cited. You need prompt-level tracking by engine and platform.
Tools like Promptwatch can break citations down by Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn source, and filter to your own channels, so you can see whether your social work is actually getting picked up.

Other trackers in the category cover the engine-by-engine view with varying depth:

For a wider list, the directory at bestgeosoftware.com compares GEO platforms side by side. If you are mainly after social listening rather than AI citations, classic tools such as Brand24 and Meltwater cover the conversation itself.
Avoid common analysis mistakes
The Reddit report lists a few pitfalls worth borrowing:
- Check collection volume around a suspicious date before concluding an engine changed its sources.
- Compare the actual Reddit URLs cited before and after a drop.
- Use rolling trends, not single-day comparisons.
Also be wary of mixing studies. AthenaHQ's 6.6% figure for social and community content and Tinuiti's January numbers use different methods and time windows from the October data. Quoting them next to each other produces a number that looks precise and means little.
The context: AI use is mainstream, trust is not
Adoption is not the bottleneck. The We Are Social and Kepios Digital 2026 Mid-Year report puts generative AI platform use at 2.42 billion people. Satisfaction is a more mixed story: the ACSI's April 2026 study of 2,711 US adults scored the six major AI platforms at 73 out of 100, with Google Gemini highest at 76 and ChatGPT and Claude at 73.

Why mention it? Because the citation sources an engine picks are part of what people trust. Google leaning on community and video content is a different product decision from ChatGPT leaning on product pages and docs, and users will feel that difference.
What I would do this quarter
- Audit where your brand is cited today, by engine and by platform. Don't assume.
- Move any "get ChatGPT to cite us via Reddit" budget into owned pages: comparisons, guides, product and landing pages.
- Start or restart a YouTube program if your audience uses Google. It is the one social platform that leads in AI Overviews and ranks first on average across all three engines.
- Clean up public Facebook and Instagram profiles. It takes an afternoon.
- Publish on LinkedIn and Reddit if Perplexity matters to you.
- Drop X from your AI search plan.
- Re-check in a month. These shares moved by several percentage points between reports, and they will move again.
The main lesson from this data is that there is no single "AI search" with one set of preferred sources. A social strategy that works for AI Overviews can be nearly worthless for ChatGPT, and the reverse. For further reading, the Promptwatch Data hub publishes the underlying reports as they update.
