Key takeaways
- GummySearch shut down around Nov 30/Dec 1, 2025, and most Reddit-specific replacements depend on Reddit's API, so they carry the same risk.
- Promptwatch Data shows Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell from about 3.83% to roughly 0.5% in mid-August 2026. By Sep 28 to Oct 4 it was 0.09%.
- Reddit still matters for Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Perplexity, but at a smaller share than before.
- Treat Reddit as audience research and reputation work first, and as a citation lever second.
- Measure presence inside AI answers, not upvotes.
What happened to GummySearch
GummySearch was the tool many founders and marketers used to find audiences, pain points, and buying signals inside subreddits. It shut down around Nov 30 or Dec 1, 2025. Sources disagree by a day on the exact date. Simular reports that the shutdown followed a failed attempt to reach a commercial API licensing agreement with Reddit.
The lesson is blunt. If your research workflow sits on top of one platform's API, it can vanish. Plan for that.
The old pricing, per painonsocial.com, ran from a free tier limited to 50 keyword searches up to a $199/month Mega plan. Another source cites a $29 to $99 range, so treat the top tier as uncertain. It doesn't matter much now, but it gives you a baseline when comparing replacements.
Reddit's role in AI search changed in 2026
A year ago, the standard advice was simple: Reddit is the most cited source in LLMs, so go post there. That advice is now out of date, at least for ChatGPT.
According to Promptwatch Data's report on Reddit citations in ChatGPT, Reddit held a steady 3.83% share of ChatGPT citations from July 18 to Aug 7, 2026. On Aug 14 it dropped below 1%, and the Aug 14 to 17 average was 0.52%, an 86.4% relative drop. The slide began Aug 8, the same day ChatGPT changed its query fanout behavior, when it began using the site: operator at scale. The report notes a data-collection issue can't be fully ruled out, so treat the size of the drop as provisional.
The other engines moved more gently. In the same report, Reddit's share in Google AI Overviews eased from about 2.5% to about 2.1% (an 11.3% relative decline), and in Google AI Mode it fell from 2.22% to 1.54%.
Then the follow-up. In Promptwatch's social media citations data for Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026:
| Engine | Share of citations from social platforms | Reddit share | Top social platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 0.46% | 0.09% | LinkedIn (0.3%) |
| Google AI Overviews | 12.2% | 2.15% | YouTube (4.28%) |
| Perplexity | 2.7% | 0.86% (tied with LinkedIn) | LinkedIn and Reddit |
That is a very different picture from the one most Reddit-for-GEO articles still paint. SUSO makes a similar point from the other direction: Reddit's ChatGPT citation share has slid twice in under two years, even though ChatGPT may still read Reddit just as much. Citation counts are a snapshot, not a durable signal.

My take: Reddit is still worth your time, but the reason has changed. It is a place to learn what your customers say in their own words and to protect your reputation. It is no longer a reliable shortcut into ChatGPT answers.
What to do instead for ChatGPT
Promptwatch's own recommendation from that report is to stop counting on Reddit threads for ChatGPT and put the effort into your own site and the content types ChatGPT does cite. Per Promptwatch's content type data, product pages are the most cited type at 22.4% (Sep 28 to Oct 4, 2026), followed by landing pages and listicles.
For the other engines:
- Google: invest in YouTube first, then keep Facebook and Instagram pages complete and active.
- Perplexity: publish on LinkedIn as well as Reddit.
- X: leave it out of AI search plans. It earns 0.04% on average across the three engines.
Replacing GummySearch: research tools
The job GummySearch did was audience research: find subreddits, find recurring questions, find complaints, find people asking for a product like yours. Here are the alternatives named in Simular's roundup. Prices come from that vendor-style listicle, and I haven't verified them on each vendor's site, so check before you buy.
| Tool | Starting price (per Simular) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reddinbox | $39/mo (Pro $99) | Free subreddit analytics tool |
| Subreddit Signals | $29/mo | Lead-focused alerts |
| RedShip | $49/mo | Free tier, lead scoring, competitor tracking |
| RedditMaster | $39/mo | Billed as the closest match to GummySearch |
| F5Bot | Free | Keyword alerts across Reddit, Hacker News, Lobsters |
| Syften | $19.95/mo | Multi-platform alerts |
| Brand24 | $199/mo (annual) | Multi-platform monitoring |
One caveat matters more than the price. Most Reddit-specific tools depend on Reddit's API, which is exactly what sank GummySearch. Tools that crawl the web, like F5Bot, carry less of that risk. If you build a process around one of these, keep your exports and don't assume it lasts forever.
Broader monitoring tools
If you want Reddit mentions alongside the rest of the web, general social listening tools cover it. Brand24 tracks mentions across 25M+ sources in real time.
Awario does similar real-time monitoring across web pages and social platforms, and is often cheaper for small teams.
Mention is another option if you also want media monitoring.
For larger budgets, enterprise listening tools like Brandwatch and Talkwalker go deeper on sentiment and audience analysis.

AI visibility tools with Reddit workflows
A few AI visibility platforms in our catalog build Reddit into their workflow. Mentionova, for example, pairs six-engine tracking with Reddit workflows.

Writesonic also published a Reddit playbook and pitches its platform for finding the Reddit discussions that influence AI answers.

CrowdReply is listed as a citation outreach tool. Be careful with anything that automates or buys placements on Reddit. Communities spot it fast, and the downside is bans and a damaged reputation.

Tactics that still work on Reddit
I haven't researched Reddit's formal self-promotion and disclosure rules for this guide, so read each subreddit's rules before you post. What follows is the practical consensus from the sources I did read.
Be useful before you are visible
Writesonic and SUSO both say the same thing in different words: Redditors dislike traditional marketing, and promotional posts get downvoted, removed, or banned. The accounts that do well answer questions properly, disclose who they work for, and show up repeatedly.
Pick smaller subreddits
Writesonic observes that smaller subreddits like r/AskMarketing can produce more AI citations than huge ones like r/marketing, simply because answers get seen. That is a single-source observation, so test it rather than assume it.
Let Reddit write your briefs
This is my favorite use. SUSO calls it the content strategy goldmine: threads show the exact phrasing people use, the objections they raise, and the comparisons they make. Pull those into your own pages. Given that ChatGPT now favors product pages, landing pages, and listicles, your own site is where that language pays off.
Consider a branded subreddit only if you have a community
SUSO suggests this for brands with established communities or complex products. For most small companies it is a lot of upkeep for little return.
Give it time
SUSO notes that fresh Reddit activity competes against a long lookback window, anywhere from a year to a decade in observed cases. Judge a Reddit program over quarters, not weeks.
Measuring whether Reddit affects AI visibility
Upvotes and follower counts tell you almost nothing about AI answers. Writesonic puts it well: the goal isn't Reddit performance, it's presence inside AI-generated responses.
Track these instead:
- Whether your brand is mentioned in answers to your target prompts, per engine
- Which sources get cited for those prompts, and whether any are Reddit threads
- Share of voice against competitors
- Sentiment of the threads that name you
- Referral traffic and conversions from AI platforms
Tools like Promptwatch can track this across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and others, including dedicated reports on the Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn sources AI cites. That matters now because the answer differs by engine.

Other trackers worth a look include Profound, Peec AI and Otterly.AI, which are mainly monitoring tools.

If you want to browse more options, the GEO software directory at bestgeosoftware.com lists many of them.
A simple 2026 Reddit plan for AI visibility
- Set up free alerts with F5Bot or a paid listening tool for your brand, competitors and category terms.
- Pick 5 to 10 small, relevant subreddits and read their rules.
- Spend a few weeks reading. Note recurring questions and complaints.
- Turn those into pages on your own site: comparisons, guides, product pages.
- Answer questions in threads with real detail and honest disclosure.
- Track AI answers per engine monthly. Expect Reddit to matter most for AI Overviews and Perplexity, and least for ChatGPT.
- Put your biggest effort where the data says citations go: your site, YouTube for Google, LinkedIn for Perplexity.
Final word
The GummySearch era taught marketers to rely on one platform's data, and the August 2026 ChatGPT shift taught them not to rely on one platform's citations. Use Reddit to listen and to be a credible voice. Then measure what AI engines actually say about you, engine by engine, and invest where the numbers point.
